28 Nissan* 5715

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 18 Nissan*, which reached me with considerable delay. As you request, I will mention your name and all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.

It seems to me that you had already written to me about all this some time ago. I am therefore surprised that you say nothing in your letter about your study of the revealed dimension of Torah* and its profound teaching, which the Zohar* calls "the soul of the Torah*" — that is, Chassidus*.

The Torah* is "our life and the length of our days." This means, in the most literal sense, that it gives us life, including in this material world. It is the channel and the vessel for receiving the blessings of Hashem, which satisfy the needs of a person and the members of his family.

To be sure, the dissemination of Torah* that you mention in your letter is extremely important. Nevertheless, it is stated: "Offer your bread to the hungry... If you see someone naked, cover him." The Tana D'Vei Eliyahu* explains that if one sees a person hungry for Torah* and unclothed in mitzvos*, one must satisfy his hunger and clothe him.

This verse concludes with: "Do not turn away from your own flesh." Indeed, one must increase, from time to time, one's own study of Torah* and one's practice of mitzvos* in the finest manner — both of which affect one's own body. And Hashem grants everyone the capacity to fulfill both simultaneously.

Concerning the details of what you write, you and your wife should give tzedakah* every weekday before prayer. Your wife should do the same before lighting candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals, dedicating it to financing a wedding or to a school that provides an education based on sacred values.

Hashem acts "measure for measure," but in a greatly increased manner, regarding marriage and the fear of Hashem of the children. May Hashem grant you success, so that you convey good tidings of all the above, in good health.

With my blessing to convey good tidings,

M. Schneerson
