Brooklyn

To the dear participants in the Gemara* study at the Tzemach Tzedek* Synagogue, of the rite of the Ari Zal*, here in New York — in particular to those who attend the classes of the great Rabbanim, distinguished Chassidim* who devote themselves to communal needs, Rav Yechezkel and Rav Gershon, may Hashem grant you long life,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter, in which you inform me that on this Shabbos*, Rosh Chodesh* of the "month of radiance" (that of Iyar*), you will conclude the study of Tractate Rosh Hashanah*. In accordance with the established and traditional formula: May Hashem assist you, with the conclusion of this tractate, to begin the study of other tractates and other books, to conclude them — to study, to teach, to guard, to do, and to fulfill.

May you study the Torah* with breadth of mind. Through this study, may you perceive the One Who gives the Torah*, as explained in various Chassidic* texts — the profound dimension and soul of the Torah*.

A timely point relates to the conclusion of this tractate.

It is stated that Rabban Gamliel* also exempted those who work in the fields (from joining the congregation for prayer, due to their professional obligations), and not only those present, for the latter are in a situation beyond their control, whereas the former are not. Likewise, it is stated that those who stand behind the Kohanim* do not receive their blessing. In fact, Rabban Gamliel* exempts only those who work in the fields.

How should one interpret the hypothesis of the Gemara* and its conclusion? The purpose of prayer and the role of the prayer leader who discharges the obligation of those present is to articulate the needs of men. The prayer leader is their delegate. Now, our Sages* say, "One confers merit upon a person even in his absence." How much more so when the one receiving the merit is connected in some way to the one conferring it.

Consequently, one considers that the prayer leader might discharge the obligation even of those who work in the fields — although he is not directly connected to them — because "one confers merit upon a person even in his absence," and one is therefore not limited to those present, who are in direct contact with the one conferring the merit.

You remark that one might imagine the contrary, since the ones are in a situation beyond their control and the others are not. True, "one confers merit upon a person even in his absence." One cannot, however, do so against his will. Therefore, one who is not in a situation beyond his control and, despite this, does not pray, acts, in a sense, "against his will" — not quite literally, but giving the appearance of not according prayer the importance it deserves. Such a situation can be likened to constraint. This, obviously, supports your words and your analysis.

In fact, one must distinguish prayer from the Priestly Blessing. Prayer depends on the person, who implores and supplicates. Obviously, the more one prepares for this, the more fit one is to receive the requested blessing. This is not the case for the Priestly Blessing, which the Kohanim* pronounce as delegates of Hashem and at His command, as it is stated: "You shall bless in this manner." And these Kohanim*, after their blessing, make the following request: "We have done what You commanded us."

The person's preparation is therefore of little consequence (when it comes to receiving the Priestly Blessing). Indeed, "Will you diminish the Hand of Hashem?" — including when the person has not prepared himself? Despite this, those who stand behind the Kohanim* do not receive their blessing. True, it emanates from Hashem. Nevertheless, the one receiving this blessing must, at least to some degree, prepare himself for it.

They (the Kohanim* and those receiving their blessing) must therefore stand face to face, in order to attest to their proximity, excluding any other position. This is the case for a blessing that comes from Hashem. The Kohanim* cannot confer it upon those behind them, inasmuch as those individuals are not in a situation beyond their control. How much more must this be the case for prayer, where it is essential for the person to prepare himself to serve Hashem, as it is stated: "To serve Him with all your heart." Tractate Taanis* 2a explains: "What is the service of Hashem of the heart? It is prayer." This is why the conclusion reached is as follows: Rabban Gamliel* exempted only those who worked in the fields.

It is known that the end is connected to the beginning, and the beginning to the end. This is true of the Torah* as a whole, but also of every detail that constitutes it. Now, in concluding a tractate, one joins two diametrically opposite points: on the one hand, the heavenly blessing that is graciously granted to man, and on the other, the fulfillment of the mission entrusted to him through his own effort. It is said that "the Torah* is one, for us," such that all its constituent points are interdependent.

What is true of the soul is also true of time. There are, indeed, two categories, just as the beginning of this tractate (Rosh Hashanah*) defines two kinds of Rosh Hashanah*: on the one hand, those that are granted by Hashem without effort on the part of man — such as the 1st of Tishrei*, the date of creation — and on the other, the 1st of Nissan*, which was established at the time of the Exodus from Egypt, when "our ancestors were saved by their faith." Furthermore, the other dates of Rosh Hashanah* result from the very nature of creation.

Here, too, these two categories are interdependent. Thus, the 1st of Tishrei* is the Rosh Hashanah* of the reign of the King, King of kings, Hashem. It is said that earthly kingship reflects heavenly kingship, from which it flows. And earthly kingship is celebrated on the 1st of Nissan*.

With my respects and my blessing that Hashem broaden and increase the number of those who take part in these studies, and that He embellish this study, as it is stated: "He will magnify the Torah* and make it glorious."
