To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shlomo Ovadya (of Meknes*, Morocco),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 23 Nissan*, in which you describe your sacred activity. You tell me that, to the extent possible, you endeavor to positively influence your surroundings, to bring hearts closer to our Father in Heaven, by encouraging the practice of Torah* and mitzvos*. You ask me about books and pamphlets that deal with this subject.

The compilations of commentaries are particularly numerous, and the works of Chassidus* even more so, which are filled with encouragement to practice Judaism and to disseminate it. Several of these books are available from the Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, who multiplies positive accomplishments and is full of enthusiasm — Rav Michoel Lipsker (the Rebbe's emissary in that city). In addition, there is everything he can explain to you orally.

All of this depends on two points, defined in well-known citations of our Sages* (see letter no. 3443): "The words of one who is animated by the fear of Hashem are heard," and "Words that emanate from the heart penetrate into the heart." Consequently, the more you deepen your fear of Hashem — which knows no limit, for if it is "with all your heart and all your soul," it can still be "with all your might" — and the more warmly you speak, the more success you will have in the influence you exert upon others.

Obviously, you yourself must adopt conduct in keeping with all that has been said. It is clear that the more you attain perfection, the more weight your words will carry.

As you request, your mother's name will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, the leader of Yisrael*, so that her state of health may improve. However, the holy Zohar*, volume 1, page 84a, and other texts specify that in such a case, one must give her name and her mother's name (and not the father's name; see letter no. 2530). Please communicate this to me in your next letter.

With my blessing to convey good tidings of all this,

For the Rebbe Shlita,

M. Schneerson
