Igrot Kodesh · Letter 342 — Halacha and Chassidus: Tzitzit Practice and Divine Attributes Unity

Volume 2 · Letter 176

By the grace of Hashem,

11 Adar Sheni 5708,

To the great Rav*, learned Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav A. E.(1),

I greet and bless you,

I reply to your letter:

A) Regarding the holes through which the Tzitzit* threads of the Tallit Katan* pass, I have already told you that my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, Shlit'a*, has them in the following form:

)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

B) You ask me about the sixth chapter of Sha'ar HaYichud VehaEmunah*, according to which the interdependence of the divine Attributes* underscores the unity of the Divinity, of His Light, and of His vessels. You note, however, that such interdependence also exists among human emotions.

Sha'ar HaYichud VehaEmunah* is reproduced almost in its entirety in the series of Chassidic discourses* Maim Rabbim*(2), delivered in 5636, with only a few changes and in a different order. This idea is discussed there in chapter 11.

The interdependence and unification of the emotional attributes* can be understood in two ways:

A) It may result from the weakness of those emotions — for example, because they are controlled by the intellect. Each therefore leaves room for its opposite.

Such are indeed the emotions of the Tikkun* system, 'flexible as reeds', which man brings forth through his reflection.

B) Emotions, even strong ones, can be channeled through the revelation of that which transcends them. This is why opposing emotions can coexist.

Such are indeed the emotions of the Akudim* system, those belonging to the essence of the soul.

Torat Chaim* and Bad Kodesh* explain all this at length.

The process just described exists both in the upper spheres and in man's personality, yet there is nonetheless a difference between these two situations.

In the upper worlds, the emotional Attributes* are interdependent because of the intense Light emanating from that of Chochmah*, intellectual discovery, for no weakness can be conceived of on high.

In this sense, the Attributes of Tikkun* are 'flexible as reeds' only in relation to those of Tohu*. This is how the passage of Sha'ar HaYichud VehaEmunah* cited above must be interpreted.

Here below(3), by contrast, the emotions manifest themselves weakly because of the action the intellect exerts upon them(4).

Enclosed herewith is the Purim* fascicle just published. You will no doubt make it available to as many people as possible.

Wishing you a joyous and pleasant Purim*,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

Notes

(1) Rav Avraham Eliyahu Axelrod. See letter no. 225.

(2) 1876, by the Rebbe Maharash*.

(3) In man's personality.

(4) By channeling them.
