26 Nissan* 5715
Brooklyn
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letters of 9, 10, and 23 Nissan*, with their contents. You have surely received my previous letter. You should meditate upon what I wrote there regarding the imperative necessity of organizing your time, your activity, and your work. True, it is said that "you are humble in your own eyes." Nonetheless, reflect for a brief moment on the letterhead and envelopes that you yourself had printed. On them you write that you are the representative of the Chabad* movement in your country.
The Chabad* movement was introduced by the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya*, by the Mitteler Rebbe*, and by his son-in-law and successor, the Tzemach Tzedek*. To meditate for a single moment on all of this suffices to inspire awe, when one considers the immense responsibility that this represents. Nevertheless, we have good hope that Hashem does not demand of you more than what you have the strength to accomplish. You are therefore granted, from the outset, the means to fully assume this mission. And everything depends solely on your will and your free choice.
You also know what is said in the name of the Rebbe Rashab*, in Toras Shalom*, at the entry for 19 Kislev* (page 39): "When one is engaged in a certain activity and at the same time reflects upon a second, one performs both inadequately" (see letter no. 1375). Consequently, I am not satisfied with what you emphasize in your letter regarding the month of Elul*, which is approaching. Indeed, all Jews believe that our righteous Moshiach* can come from one day to the next. Now, when he asks you what you did during Nissan* and Iyar*, you will have to answer that you could not carry on the activity that was needed, because you were busy preparing your trip. Consequently, you did not properly assume the mission for which Divine Providence placed you in that location.
It is understood that the custom of Chabad* and Lubavitch* is not to moralize. In my view, the discussions and exchanges until now have not succeeded in modifying the established arrangement. However, I have good hope that the effect will ultimately be felt and that, concretely, this modification will indeed take place.
These words are therefore not moralizing, but rather a joyful and friendly assistance, so that you may put into practice the injunction of our Sages*, according to which "we are workers of the day" (charged with making day in the world, illuminating it).
It is clear that all of this is addressed not only to you personally, but also to the other Chassidim* in your location. There is, however, a difference. Hashem has granted you the success of receiving your material sustenance through a spiritual and agreeable activity, which is not the case for the other Chassidim*. Indeed, one must maintain order in the synagogue, the second must be a craftsman, and the third must engage in commerce of material — and sometimes even coarse — goods.
I have good hope that these few lines, though quantitatively brief, will suffice to move you to concrete action. You will not content yourself with promises. You will immediately adopt the attitude just described. For all of us, and each of us, have received from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, the assurance that success is certain, as long as one acts.
Adults must devote far less time to amusements than children. Indeed, they appreciate the merit that the mission entrusted to them represents.
With my blessing that you convey good tidings of all this,
M. Schneerson
