3rd day of Chol HaMoed* Pesach* 5715

Brooklyn

(This letter is addressed to Rav Abba Pliskin, who directed the Yeshivah* Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch in Melbourne, Australia; see letter no. 1326.)

Greetings and blessings,

You speak of the young man Shmuel Gurvitch and explain the reason he is coming here. I am somewhat surprised, for there is a Yeshivah* in your location (see letters no. 3000, 3418, 3598, 3615, and 3744) that has immense potential. This is therefore a mitzvah* that cannot be entrusted to someone else. And indeed, no one else is devoting himself to it.

The Chassidim* do not act as they should, neither in quantity nor in quality. The reason is surely the difficulty of the times, but there must also be other issues. It follows that those who have the merit and the success to take part in this sacred mission must be encouraged by the others. They must be assisted in every way possible.

Instead, you explain to me in your letter that it is good and proper for this young man to abandon the enviable lot that Divine Providence has assigned him — namely, to help and strengthen the development of the Yeshivah*. He should therefore cross the ocean to seek "what is great and grand."

You ask what goal to assign him, so that he may acquire knowledge of Chassidus*. Even if it were true that he could do so only by crossing the sea, I wonder what would be most beneficial for him — and, in fact, I have no doubt whatsoever about this. Should he fulfill the mission that Divine Providence has entrusted to him within the Yeshivah* Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak, or should he become a greater scholar of the revealed dimension of Torah* and of Chassidus* than he is at present?

Moreover, the Alter Rebbe* writes at the beginning of Torah Or* that tzedakah*, including in its spiritual form, enables one to attain "a mind and heart a thousand times more refined." Consequently, one hour of study of the revealed Torah* and of Chassidus* in Australia, while engaged in this activity, will yield the same success as a thousand hours in another place where this activity would be lacking.

More precisely, I have not yet been informed that the young men and students in Australia devote every free moment to Torah* and to prayer, which is the "service of Hashem of the heart." There is therefore still room for increase in your location. Why, then, diminish the activities of the Yeshivah* and, thereby, one's own success?

It is surely unnecessary to say more regarding what is perfectly obvious.
