Igrot Kodesh · Letter 341 — Spiritual Accountability: Silence as Evasion of Mission

By the grace of Hashem,

To the learned Chassid, Hashem-fearing ...

I greet and bless you,

It is stated in the Chassidic discourse* entitled 'For Hashem Tests You', delivered in 5708, that lack of knowledge does not in any way change the situation, and an illustration is even given to convey this idea. When I studied this text I was somewhat surprised. Is it not obvious that this is the case in this world? Why stress the point so?

Then I considered men's attitudes, particularly in places where they are exposed to the enticements of the forces of evil, and I realized that this form of justification is very common. People claim they no longer think about a certain matter, no longer speak of it, and this suffices to remove it from the agenda.

Yet in the present case it concerns concrete action of the utmost importance. But you think that by keeping silent about the mission entrusted to you — one you have promised to assume — you will manage to close the matter.

This is how one opens the door to the 'skilled specialist'(1) who 'today says... and tomorrow...'(2).

כשנדפס בהמאמר כי מנסה תש"ח, אשר העדר הידיעה אינו משנה את הענין וגם מחזקים את זה במשל, הי' ק"ק אצלי דבענינים דלמטה פשיטא הוא ומאי קמ"ל. אבל כשהתבוננתי בדרכי בנ"א ובפרט במקום שיש שליטה לפיתויי הלעומ"ז - ראיתי והנה הצטדקות זו רגילה ביותר, אשר אומר שכיוון שהוא מסיח דעת מענין פלוני או שאינו מדבר אדותיו ה"ז גופא מסלק את הענין מסדה"י.

ובעשי', שהיא לעילא, קא עסקינן, אשר כנראה שיטת... עתה, שכשיעברו בשתיקה ע"ז שעליהם מוטל לעשות או שגם הבטיחו לעשות... ה"ז מסדר הדבר! וכאן פתחו לו פתח לאומן הידוע אשר היום א"ל כך כו'.
