Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, in which you inform me of the celebration organized on the occasion of the inauguration of the Yeshivah* building. I am somewhat surprised that you are so brief. However, I grant you extenuating circumstances, given your many activities. Nevertheless, information is lacking here.

It is inconceivable that, when the time comes, having a greater amount of information would not be useful. In any event, I was very pleased to learn of your success (at this dinner). You surely know the practice in these countries, which requires that the motivation generated at such celebrations remain alive throughout the year. For this, one must meet the participants, remind them diplomatically how moved they were during the event. In this way, they will be ready to increase their physical and financial commitment.

It is no doubt unnecessary to remind you that it would be good to publish, in the appropriate newspaper, a description of the celebration, so that its participants can express themselves publicly and arouse the competitive spirit of others. Moreover, the importance of the Yeshivah* will thereby be enhanced.

Regarding the proposal that students wear uniforms, I see no utility in this. This is not done in our schools in the Holy Land or in France. On the contrary, it may have a drawback, for it is impossible to satisfy everyone. These uniforms could therefore prevent some from attending the school (because the uniform does not please them). Furthermore, this practice could pose problems in certain areas (one might have requirements for the uniform that would contravene, for example, the rules of modesty), which cannot be accepted. Discord would result. This proposal must therefore be set aside, describing the situation as it is — that is, showing that this does not exist and has never existed in our institutions.

It is out of the question for boys and girls to be in the same building. I am surprised that another location cannot be found for these studies, for at present, the number of girls wishing to attend our schools must be quite small.

You tell me of a young man awaiting my approval to study for several hours (each day) at the Yeshivah*. I am surprised that any doubt still remains in this matter, given how emphatically my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, stresses the importance of acting in this way. Let him therefore receive all blessings. No doubt he will do so in the proper manner, and Hashem will grant him success.

The same applies to the follow-up regarding what you write in your letter. You say that the Chassidim* working for the Yeshivah* must be encouraged. Here again, I am astonished — for what can one add to the passionate words of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, concerning proper education based on sacred values? Moreover, he himself acted accordingly, devoting his time, his energy, his fervor, and his deepest powers to the education not only of adults, but also of young boys and girls. What is clearly established needs no demonstration.

You contemplate participating in the celebration of 5 Iyar* (see also letter no. 3469). I have received, in recent days, a letter from the Holy Land in which I am told that several schools there, including some affiliated with the Mizrachi* (the national religious), do not participate in this celebration, for various reasons. How much more should this be the case in your country. One must not participate in what is organized under the auspices of a party, as I have written on numerous occasions.

All of this must be explained to others as well. Your purpose is to devote yourself to education in Jewish values, and nothing else. If a certain action is liable to drive away a boy or girl from your school, it runs counter to its very reason for being.

Concerning this date, one finds very divergent opinions. Consequently, if you take a position on the matter, you will encounter opposition from several Jewish circles. It is therefore obviously preferable not to address this question — to minimize its importance until it disappears. If this is impossible, you will surely find the appropriate words to explain all of this.

With my blessing for a kosher* and joyous Pesach*, for success in all the above, as well as in your personal concerns,

M. Schneerson
