To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Aharon Mordechai (Rav A. M. Zilbershtrom; see letter no. 2834),
Greetings and blessings,
A) A timely matter: a teachers' meeting is being organized under the auspices of the school directors (of the Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch network in the Holy Land), so that they may consult regarding the new school year and preparations for enrollment.
It is clear that this meeting must also serve to discuss improvements that can be made to pedagogical methods and curricula. Unofficially, the time has finally come, in my opinion, to seek means of establishing contact with the parents of the students and exerting an influence upon them. Indeed, the atmosphere of the home must not differ from that of the school — quite the contrary — and this is a particularly important point, even though it does not fall within the direct purview of a school.
B) You propose that the young members of the Chabad* association teach in schools that are entirely removed from religious practice (see letters no. 3440 and 3482). It is obvious that they cannot do so within such a school, for this would constitute a means of legitimizing it. One might therefore fear that some parents who, until now, had not sent their children there, would begin to do so.
To be sure, such experiments have been attempted in various places, including in New York. However, it is then emphasized that this is not an initiative of the school, that it is not part of its program, that it is merely an activity of the students, even if it was suggested to them. In such a case, the role of the school administration consists solely of not opposing this teaching, or even of unofficially facilitating what is a personal initiative emanating from some students.
It will no doubt be possible to find a synagogue or another venue in which this teaching of Jewish values can be organized. Obviously, you may make my opinion known to all whom it may interest, particularly to the young members of the Chabad* association.
As the festival of Matzos* approaches, coming for us and for all of Yisrael* for good, I wish you a kosher* and joyous celebration, together with all the members of your family.
With my blessing on the occasion of the festival,
M. Schneerson
