Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 4 Nissan*.

I am told that you have ceased eating in the morning, and I am surprised by this. First of all, I do not understand the reason for such behavior. Nor do I understand what permits you to act in this manner. We must adhere to the teaching of our holy masters, and you know the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* (see letter no. 3381), commenting on the verse, "When you see the donkey of your enemy... you shall help him" — without resorting to fasts and mortifications (see letters no. 2346, 3529, 3761, and 3769).

How much more must this be the case in this weak generation, when a hungry body constitutes an obstacle (to fervent prayer and comprehension in study). Prayer with fervor and Torah* study are therefore adversely affected. Even if one merited a reward for such a practice, one may wonder whether that reward would not be forfeited by the harm that results from it.

If you wish to follow my counsel, adopt the well-known approach (see letter no. 2178) that "it is preferable to eat in order to pray, rather than to pray in order to eat."

On the occasion of the festival of Pesach*, which approaches for us and for all of Yisrael* for good, I wish you a kosher* and joyous celebration, and may you be able to announce to me that your heart's desire (presumably, to have a child) has been fulfilled.

הצלחה לפעול בעצמן ובמשפחה במה שנחוץ על פי ההוראות של נשיאינו
הק׳ זצוקללה״ה נבג״מ זי״ע ,שבדורנו נשיא הדור הוא חמי כ״ק
אדמו״ר ,שיום ההילולא שלו מחר ,זכותו יגן עלינו ,וכן להגדיל את החוג
שלהן ע״י צירוף עוד נשים ,בנות אברהם יצחק ויעקב.
והרי ידוע פתגם רבנו הזקן ,שחסידות אינה ענין של קבוצה נבדלת
בעם ישראל ,אלא חסידות שייכת לכל כלל ישראל ,וכל איש ואשה
שעושה בזה להגשים משאלתו ,לפי הפתגם ,של רבנו הזקן ,הרי הוא
מובטח שהרביים ימשיכו הצלחה בעבודה זו.
מובן שכאשר מצליחים בעבודה הרוחנית ,מביא הדבר ממילא
ברכה והצלחה גם בענינים הגשמיים בנוגע אליהן ולמשפחתן שיחיו,
והשי״ת יצליחן.
בברכה לכל אחת ואחת היא וכל בני ביתה שיחיו במה שנחוץ להן
בגשמיות וברוחניות.
