Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 21 Adar*, in which you discuss your family situation and your age. Indeed, you are twenty-two years old and find yourself at a crossroads, wondering whether you should continue teaching, as you have begun to do with success, or pursue your studies at the Yeshivah*. You ask my opinion.
The custom in Yerushalayim*, which happens to be a positive practice and an integral part of the Torah*, is not to wait until an advanced age to marry. You must therefore seek a good match with all appropriate energy. For this, you also need to earn a livelihood, and in the present era, especially in our Holy Land, one must make full use, for the sake of teaching, of all the capabilities found among those who fear the word of Hashem — to exploit them fully.
Consequently, in my opinion, you should maintain your teaching position and even seek to expand it. May Hashem grant that the saying of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, be fulfilled in you — namely, that tzedakah*, including in its spiritual form, enables one to attain "a mind and heart a thousand times more refined." Therefore, even if you devote less time to your personal study of Torah*, your comprehension will be all the more profound.
You tell me that you tasted the teaching of Chabad*, but could not withstand the intense luminescence, and so you ceased following the ways of Chassidus*. I am surprised by this. Even a cursory reflection should enable you to understand that such a claim is not acceptable. For the Torah* was not given to angels. Each of its parts is revealed and disseminated, and when one becomes aware of the existence of one of them, one immediately receives the mitzvah* to study it. The study of Torah* is considered equivalent to all the mitzvos*. Its profound teaching, which the Zohar* calls "the soul of the Torah*," vivifies the revealed dimension of Torah*.
You say you did not have the merit. But it is not at all a matter of merit in this case. Our Sages* rule that "one who tells you he did not make effort yet found success — do not believe him." Conversely, they also state that "one who tells you he made effort yet did not find success — do not believe him."
Obviously, the leaven that causes the dough to rise erects obstacles before everyone, and there is every reason to think that this is also the reason in your case. Regarding this, our Sages* say in Tractate Shabbos* 105b: "You shall have no foreign god — this alludes to the yetzer hara*." May Hashem grant that you be able to convey good tidings regarding this matter.
With my blessing for a kosher* and joyous Pesach*,
For the Rebbe Shlita,
The secretary
