Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 26 Adar*, and I read therein with satisfaction that your state of health is improved. You have surely received my letter, sent some time ago.

May Hashem grant that very soon you fully recover your health (see letter no. 3646), both physical and spiritual, in accordance with the Chassidic* discourse of the Alter Rebbe*, entitled "The Song of Eisan* the Ezrachite" (a term which also denotes physical and moral strength), which is reproduced at the beginning of the Kuntres Limmud HaChassidus*.

You ask me whether it suffices to study the books and discourses in order to improve one's conduct and fulfill the service of Hashem. It is clear that this is not the case. One must, in addition, accept the authority of someone. Indeed, it is stated, "Make for yourself a teacher" (see letter no. 3661), and the verb "make" here implies compulsion, as it is said, "One compels (lit., 'one makes') to give tzedakah*." One must therefore apply this compulsion, even when the student does not wish it.

Moreover, we are dealing here with relatively abstract concepts, which are the subject matter of Chassidus*. Error is therefore easy and all the more damaging. You also know the meaning of the words of Moshe Rabbeinu*, the teacher of all Yisrael*: "Write this as a remembrance in the book," yet nevertheless, "make it heard in the ears of Yehoshua" — for the book alone does not suffice.

Obviously, it does not suffice to practice the precept of "make for yourself a teacher." It is also stated, "Acquire for yourself a friend" — that is, someone to whom one can confide, discussing one's own shortcomings. As the Mitteler Rebbe* says, one can thereby ally two Divine souls* against a single animal soul*.

You also ask me about sanctity. Various individuals study, in the days preceding the marriage, the last two chapters of the Gate of Sanctity of the Reishis Chochmah*. This applies also to what you are asking about.

With my blessing for a kosher* and joyous Pesach*, in good health,

M. Schneerson
