Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Adar*. From the very outset of the endeavor, you wish for your conditions to be met — on one hand, that perfect unity should prevail, and on the other, that the Chassidim* and institutions should be subordinate to you. It is quite clear that, in other terms, such demands amount, from the start, to an abandonment of the effort.

The truth must be stated. I never saw, even when my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, led the Chassidim*, that true unity was established, or that the Chassidim* and institutions were subordinate to anyone — except, for the most part, to the leader himself, that is, to my father-in-law, the Rebbe*.

The solution, in your case, does not necessarily depend on these conditions, which will only be fully applicable when Moshiach* comes, of which era it is said, "The earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem." At that time, there will no longer be occasion to devote oneself to such concerns, and a division of roles will be made — each person will receive one that will be defined with the utmost precision.

Obviously, this role must correspond to your capabilities, and you will devote yourself to it with all appropriate vigor. In this area, you must indeed be the one who leads. It will also be incumbent upon you to consult with the other members of the executive committee. As is customary, the final decision will be made according to the majority opinion. For the most important matters, a question will be submitted in writing, and you will then await the response.

It is clear that certain results cannot be achieved by a single person — for example, when it comes to visiting work sites as a delegate. Nevertheless, each person's role will be clearly defined, and all will know success. It will therefore be easier to gain recognition in the aforementioned domains.

I send you my blessing that you, together with the members of your family, have a kosher* and joyous Pesach*. May the "food of faith*" and the "food of healing" fully exert their effect upon each of you, bringing you physical and spiritual health alike.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ח דאדר.. הנה מובן ופשוט שלחכות בהתחלת העבודה על שיקוימו התנאים שכותב אודותם. א) שתהי' אחדות גמורה בין וכו'. ב) שיהיו אנ"ש ומוסדותיהם כפופים כו' - ה"ז, במלות אחרות, להתיאש אפילו מהתחלת עבודה. והאמת ניתן להאמר שעדיין לא מצאתי תקופה אפילו בשנות נשיאות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר - שבה שררה אחדות גמורה ושאנ"ש ומוסדות היו כפופים למי שהוא (מלבד חלק חשוב מהם - בהנוגע להנזיא הוא כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר).

ופתרון המצב הוא - לאו דוקא בתנאים הנ"ל (שהם הלכתא למשיחא שאז נאמר ומלאה הארץ דיעה אתה ', ובמילא לא יהי' זמן פנוי לענינים של כו') אלא חלוקת העבודה, רצוני לאמר שכל אחד ואחד יקח על עצמו ענין מסוים ומפורט, מובן שצ"ל מתאים ליכולתו, ושיעבוד בזה בכל המרץ ובענין זה יהי' הוא הראש, ומתפקידו יהי' ג"כ להתייעץ בזה עם שאר חברי ועד הפועל, וההחלטה ברוב דיעות כנהוג, ובענינים חשובים ביותר ע"י שאלה במכתב ולחכות עד קבלת מענה. ומובן שישנם כמה ענינם שאין ביכולת איש אחד למלאותם, ובדוגמא כשצריך לבקר בתור ב"כ במלאכות כו' וכו', אבל כין שיהי' כל אחד אבנא דהוא מתגושש בו ויראה בזה הצלחה - קל יהי' לפעול ההכנעה בענינים הנ"ל...

בברכה לחג הפסח כשר ושמח - לו ולכל ב"ב שיחיו, ושמיכלא דמהימנותא ומיכלא דאסוותא יפעלו פעולתם בכ"א מהם במילואם בבריאות הגשמי והרוחני גם יחד.
