4 Nissan* 5715

Brooklyn

Greetings and blessings,

A) Concerning the distribution of Matzah Shemurah*, I am enclosing a copy of the letter (see letters no. 2591 and 2649). It is clear that its content (the request to organize such a distribution) applies to this year as well, for the Torah is eternal. To our sorrow and pain, many people still need encouragement and strengthening, as stated in the discourse (of Shabbos Parshas HaChodesh 5715, reproduced in Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 1, p. 243; see also letters no. 3412, 3413, and 3469). Obviously, the more one multiplies the number of individuals receiving Matzah Shemurah, the more one fulfills this Mitzvah* in the finest possible manner, and the more one is worthy of praise.

You know the promise of the Arizal* (see the Be'er Heitev*, Orach Chaim*, beginning of ch. 447; see also letter no. 3379), according to which "one who guards himself from even the smallest quantity of chametz* on Pesach*..." (receives the assurance that he will not commit transgressions during the year). Now, the Matzos of the Seder* are of essential character — particularly the middle one — since they are a Torah obligation even at the present time. They are called "the food of faith*" and "the food of healing," inasmuch as they strengthen the faith of every Jew.

B) You tell me that various questions are posed to you regarding our faith and the manner of providing rational proof for it. Various books and writings have been published on this subject, and I am surprised that you cite none of them.

Obviously, it is difficult to address all of this in writing and to repeat what has already been printed elsewhere many years ago. Nevertheless, I will cite here several points, so as not to leave your question unanswered.

1) Is it possible to demonstrate, in a positive or negative manner, the existence of Hashem?

Here is my response:

It is clear that one can have a positive perception of the Divine. The following proofs may be cited:

a) One who sees a printed book comprising hundreds of pages will be certain that there exists a printing house in which this text was composed, in order to convey its message. He will exclude the possibility that ink was poured randomly and that the drops organized themselves into a book of several hundred pages setting forth sensible explanations.

The same is true, and even more so, when one sees a piece of wood or a stone and then learns that these contain not hundreds or thousands, but billions upon billions of atoms — all organized in a wondrous fashion and governed by immutable and extremely precise rules.

The Chovos HaLevavos* and the Kuzari* explain all this at length. Consult also the Sefer HaChakira* of the Tzemach Tzedek*.

b) One who observes the vitality of human beings or of animals, for example, will arrive at the conclusion that the soul exists.

2) Why must we accept that the Torah was given at Mount Sinai? And if the proof is solely the Tradition, the same may be said of all other religions, with the distinctions that must be made in this regard.

Here is my response:

I am surprised that you apparently have not read what is said on this subject in the Shavuos* pamphlet of the Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch and in the Conversations with Youth. Indeed, there is a fundamental difference (between the Sinai revelation and other religions).

Thus, one can envisage that a single man deceives his generation. Likewise, several people can conspire to do so. A group of men may originate such a deception because they all share a common motivation justifying it. This is the case for all religions — for the Christians, the followers of Yishmael, the Hindus.

For each of these beliefs, a single man initially declared to a few of his disciples that Hashem had revealed Himself to him and transmitted precepts, instructions, decrees, and laws to him. This is so for all religions in the world, without a single exception, other than ours — our Torah, of which we have knowledge through the preceding generations.

Indeed, the Children of Israel of each period received it from the preceding generation, and so it continued through the generations, from the one that stood before Mount Sinai. Six hundred thousand men between the ages of twenty and sixty, accompanied by several million people — youth under twenty, elderly over sixty, women, members of other peoples — all together heard: "I am Hashem, your Elokim*" — not through an intermediary, but directly from Hashem.

Among those six hundred thousand men, there were people from different backgrounds — the ignorant and the sagely erudite, the rich and the poor. Yet all heard the same words, in the same formulation, which they in turn transmitted to their children, and those to theirs, until our generation.

You surely know that Reform or Conservative Judaism (the two branches of Reform Judaism in America) appeared only a few dozen years ago. Granted, previously there were also some heretics, but overall, millions upon millions of Jews pronounced the same words, in the same formulation. Throughout the history of the People of Israel, there was not a single moment that did not see this transmission, by hundreds of thousands of men and women, jointly.

There exists no other event in the world that can present testimony as compelling as the giving of the Torah.

3) Why can we not modify the decrees of our Sages*?

Here is my response:

Let us first take an example from mathematics. This discipline, at the present time, is based on principles that were already known and recorded in books in the era of the ancient Greeks, such as Euclid. Granted, the works of that era are much more rudimentary than those we possess today. However, their principles and methods have been preserved, and it is in this manner that one progresses from one domain to another, from one invention to the next. Yet one reasons as before, with the same rules, and one can conclude that what is discovered now is always a deduction from the words of the ancients.

In due proportion, the same is true for our holy Torah. It revealed principles and the manner of putting them into practice, of deriving new conclusions. All of this was given at Mount Sinai to several million people, all assembled together. Subsequently, the Sages of each era, based on these same principles — or, in common parlance, on "the methods of interpreting the Torah" — advanced along the path that the Torah defines as truth. They retained various conclusions or, more commonly, laws and directives.

Granted, these laws were taught by a particular Sage of the Mishnah*, the Gemara*, or a particular scholar. They derive, nevertheless, from the principles, rules, and methods that Moshe Rabbeinu* received from the Giver of the Torah Himself. It follows that if one wishes to resolve a difficulty raised by our era — for example, those posed by electricity — and if one desires to do so in the spirit of the Torah, following the example of the Rabbanim* of previous eras, one must follow the path of His Torah and the rules it establishes.

One of these rules is the following: a rabbinical court cannot annul the decisions of another rabbinical court unless it is greater than the former. And this principle was established by the Giver of the Torah Himself. According to Him as well, within the court itself, it is the majority opinion that must prevail, provided that all its members, in their manner of reasoning, follow the paths of the Torah.

4) Is there an inherent sanctity* to the letters? And what does the Shulchan Aruch* say on this subject?

Works predating the Shulchan Aruch address this subject — Tractate Shabbos 104a, various texts of the holy Zohar* and the Tikkunei Zohar*. And the same is true for the vowel signs (see letters no. 103 and 3435), as stated in Tikkunei Zohar, Tikkun 5 and Tikkun 21, as well as the Tikkunim of the Zohar Chadash*.

All of this is very clear and self-evident. If some contest it and raise doubts, it is solely because they have no other way to justify their transgression of the Mitzvos* of our Torah, Torah of life. Those individuals are ashamed to admit that they are unable to master their passions. They therefore choose to absolve themselves by calling the practice into question rather than themselves.

It must therefore be clear that the alternative is as follows: either one accepts the Heavenly origin of the Torah, and one must then accept the Rambam's* statement that "one who believes in the entire Torah except for a single letter, which he rejects, goes against the faith"; or one rejects the precepts of the Torah, in which case one also calls into question the assertion of the Written Torah that "I am Hashem, your Elokim."

Those who believe that Hashem is the Creator of the world only on Yom Kippur* or when Yizkor* (the memorial prayer for the departed) is recited in the synagogue, but not during the rest of the year or during the week, adopt an attitude that defies the most elementary logic. One who consciously opts for such a course of action belongs in a psychiatric hospital, Heaven forbid.

In truth, as I was saying, many people do not wish to struggle against their evil inclination* and thus attempt to justify the transgressions they commit.

May Hashem grant that you be a good emissary, transmitting true faith to the members of your community — especially at this time, just before consuming "the food of faith" and "the food of healing," which strengthens the pure and unaltered faith in every Jewish man and woman. Our Sages teach that a child can call his father only from the moment he has tasted wheat. Chassidus* explains that this alludes to the Matzah*. And the same applies to one who is a child in his intellectual maturity (in the service of Hashem), when he calls his Father Who is in Heaven.

With my blessing for a kosher* and joyous Pesach festival,
