Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3382 — Grief & Loss

B"H
1 Nissan* 5715
Brooklyn
To my close relative, the Rav*, distinguished Chassid*
who fears Hashem,
Rav Shmuel Menachem Mendel (the Rav Sh. M. M. Schneersohn, of Yerushalayim*; see letters no. 2627, 3409, 3448, and 3610 regarding him),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of the 26th of Adar* and to the one that preceded it. In accordance with your request, I will mention the names of all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, so that they may obtain the fulfillment of all their needs, material and spiritual.
You speak of the customs of the first year (of mourning) and the anniversary of passing that present a novel character. These are cited, for the most part, in the printed pamphlets (see Sefer HaMinhagim Chabad, pp. 77–79) for the 10th (Hilulah of Rebbetzin Rivkah, wife of the Rebbe Maharash*, and that of the Frierdiker Rebbe*) and the 13th (Hilulah of Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah, wife of the Rebbe Rashab*) of Shevat*, or for 2 Nissan.
You also ask me whether the mourner should lead the Minchah* prayer on the eve of Shabbos* or of Pesach*. The principle, in this matter, is as follows: the mourner always leads the service, except on a day when Musaf* is recited, in which case he does not lead even the Maariv* service.
You mention the text that should appear on the tombstone (of the father of the addressee, Rav Yisrael Yosef Schneersohn, who passed away on 10 Shevat 5715). In this matter, one must be mindful of the honor of the deceased and also of the honor of the other individuals buried in the same cemetery. One must therefore not introduce a modification that could be disrespectful to the latter. Consequently, if titles are found on the other graves in this cemetery, you will do the same for this one.
Obviously, one must also mention the family from which he descends, without, of course, showing disrespect to the others. If this mention is engraved on the stone, those who pass near the grave will pronounce its words — or at least think of them — when they stand in its proximity. And you know the statement of the Zohar* that "a word ascends and pierces the heavens, awakening what must be awakened, for the good..." The holy Tanya* explains this in chapter 40.
With my blessing that you celebrate, together with your dear ones and your entire family, the Festival of Matzos* as our holy Torah, Torah of life, requires,
M. Schneerson
