Igrot Kodesh · Letter 337 — Rebuking Refusal of a Rebbe-Assigned Mission

Volume 2 · Letter 171

By the grace of Hashem*,

21 Adar Rishon* 5708,

To the Chassid* who fears Hashem* ...

I greet you and bless you,

I am replying to your letter of the 10th of this month:

You give me four reasons why you are not working in ..., despite the letter that my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, addressed to you. The older Chassidim* told you that they had their say in this matter. Furthermore, you feel no enthusiasm for doing so. You also say that this work is not very important, since it is not growing. Finally, you point out that the others are not involved in it either. And you ask me my view on this question.

I have just seen the copy of the letter that my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, sent you, and I do not understand how you could have the slightest doubt in this matter. He clearly indicates what mission he is entrusting to you and grants you his blessing for success in this area.

You feel no enthusiasm for this. Various texts of Chassidut* explain that Mitzvah* — a commandment — shares the same root as Tzavta* — a bond. One becomes attached to the one who gave the commandment by fulfilling it. When a specific soul receives, through this commandment, the opportunity to bond with a collective soul, is there a better reason to be enthusiastic? It is true that for now your animal soul* does not sense this. You should consult, in this connection, the Chassidic* discourse titled 'For Hashem* tests you,' delivered in 5663[1].

This institution is not growing and the others are not involved. But that is precisely the question being posed. Certain committee members or others who could contribute are not doing so or lack eagerness. This is the very reason why a proper Torah*-and-mitzvot*-based education is not growing and even discourages others.

How much more so is the question pressing when it concerns alumni of the Yeshiva*[2], whose mission is to be 'lights that illuminate.' If your personal light does not shine for now, you thereby prevent many lights from shining — lights that could have been glowing all this time!

You should consult the Kuntres HaAvodah*[3], at the end of page 43, the Kuntres UMa'ayan*[3], at page 22, and other texts. There is no need to elaborate further.

With wishes for all good,

Rav Menachem Schneerson*,
