Greetings and blessings,

I received your letter, which followed a long silence. You mention your birthday, and as you request, I will mention your name as well as that of your wife, for a year of success, material and spiritual. Indeed, these two dimensions are linked in every domain, and how much more so for the sons and daughters of Israel.

Our Torah, Torah of life and eternal Torah, requires that one be in good moral health. And it is clear that this requirement provides the strength and blessing necessary to also be in good physical health.

Moreover, the Baal Shem Tov* applies to the body the words of the verse: "You shall surely help him." He thereby condemns fasting and mortifications. Chabad* Chassidus* explains that "there is nothing else besides Him," that everything is an integral part of the One Hashem — and this is indeed so, concretely. The Rambam* explains, at the beginning of chapter 4 of his Laws of Dispositions, that "maintaining a healthy body is among the ways of Hashem."

I conclude by extending to you and to your wife my wishes for a kosher* and joyous Pesach* festival, so that the "food of healing" and the "food of faith*" may fully exert their effect upon each person, materially and spiritually.

לאחרי שתיקתו הארוכה נתקבל מכתבו בו כותב אודות יום ההולדת שלו, וכבקשתו אזכירו ואת זוגתו שיחיו לשנת הצלחה הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות שאם בנוגע לכל העולם כולו הא בהא תליא עאכו"כ בהנוגע לבני ובנות ישראל, וכיון שתורתנו תורת חיים ותורת עולם דורשת בריאות ברוחניות, בודאי שדרישה זו עצמה נותנת כח וברכה בהנוגע לבריאות בגשמיות, ובפרט ע"פ תורת הבעש"ט דעזב תעזוב עמו עם הגוף (ולא ע"י תעניות וסיגופים), וע"פ מה שנתבאר בתורת חסידות חב"ד איך שאין עוד כי הכל אחדות הרי בודאי ובודאי שכן הוא, וכבר ידוע לשון הרמב"ם בהלכות דיעות ריש פרק ד' היות הגוף בריא ושלם מדרכי השם הוא.

ואחתום באיחולי לחג פסח כשר ושמח לו ולזוגתו שיחיו, ואשר מיכלא דאסוותא ומיכלא דהימנותא, יפעלו בכאו"א את פעולתם השלימה בגשמיות וברוחניות.
