To the eminent Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Avraham Abba (the Rav A. A. Friedman, of Detroit),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the 19th of Adar, in which you describe the manner in which you are organizing the distribution of books pertaining to the fear of Hashem and the strengthening of Jewish observance.

You are correct in saying that this effort must assume the broadest possible proportions and reach the widest circles. Nevertheless, this is a new undertaking, and our Sages* emphasize that all beginnings are difficult. Generally, when one introduces a program of large scale — or even of medium scale — one encounters numerous difficulties and subsequently becomes discouraged.

In such a case, those who devote themselves to such an activity or contribute to it are left with a bad impression, and the harm that results outweighs the good they might have achieved. The activity then diminishes. It is therefore necessary to take into account what is possible, not only what is desirable.

In accordance with the explanation of the Baal Shem Tov*, it is precisely when "your beginning is in distress" — when the action is conducted in this manner — that "your end will see great expansion." The committee established for this purpose in Detroit must therefore act gradually (literally, "from the simpler to the more complex"), beginning first with what is certain and poses no problem (literally, "presents no adhesion"), rather than with what is doubtful — for example, books whose content seems appropriate but which are, in reality, authored by writers who are questionable. As I was saying, it seems inevitable that a questionable author will write a questionable book.

Gradually, this committee will become accustomed to proceeding in this manner. The concrete practice itself will show how to evolve the original framework, and this evolution will be easier. If the beginning is not grand and expansive, the activity can be developed progressively, both in terms of the circles of people involved and the books and brochures distributed.

You know the ruling of the Rambam* in his Laws of Dispositions, according to which the middle path is, for the service of Hashem, the good and upright one. This period demands and requires that one devote oneself to this distribution, that one not neglect it. Conversely, the beginning of the action must necessarily follow this middle path.

For this reason, advertising in newspapers that communicates in detail the names of such books is premature for the time being. First, significant expenses result from this. Moreover, by establishing such a list, one personally endorses every book that appears on it. One also takes a position by not including a certain book — except for those whose positive character is established independently, or at least for those that belong to the first category. This will arouse opposition, and at least at the beginning of the endeavor, one must guard against such a course of action to the fullest extent possible.

If you act in this way, putting all of this into practice with the appropriate energy — especially during these days preceding the festival (of Pesach*) and during Chol HaMoed*, which are propitious for all this — I have good hope that you will know success.

With my blessing of success in all that has been said, and for a kosher* and joyous Festival of Matzos*,
