Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, written at the conclusion of Shabbos Terumah*. I read with pleasure that you visit this Chassid* of good conduct and many accomplishments. Indeed, our Sages, in Tractate Sotah 14a, derive from the verse "You shall follow Hashem, your Elokim*," that one must visit the sick (as Hashem Himself did by visiting Avraham). Consult that text. According to the Baal Hilchos Gedolos* (see letter no. 170 on this subject), this constitutes a Mitzvah* from the Torah. Consult also the first Root of the Sefer HaMitzvos* of the Rambam*, as well as the commentaries on that text.

It is stated: "You shall not turn away from your own flesh." And even more so must you also visit your own personal "illness." Our Sages explain in the Yerushalmi*, Shabbos, chapter 14, paragraph 3, that this "illness" refers to the evil inclination*.

The Holy One, blessed be He, acts "measure for measure." By visiting a sick person, one alleviates his suffering, and in the same way, one strengthens the help of Hashem by visiting one's own illnesses. Our Sages affirm that in such a case, one receives the help of Hashem.

It would be advisable for you to study the Chassidic discourse of 18 Elul* 5653 (1893, by the Rebbe Rashab*), found in the pamphlet of 18 Elul 5703 (1943, presenting the teachings of the Frierdiker Rebbe*). Someone will surely be able to procure this text for you.

This Chassid will also be able to explain to you what the three study sessions are — applying to everyone — that were instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. You will adopt them in the future. They cover the Chumash*, Tehillim*, and Tanya*, and are well known.

במענה על מכתבו ממוצש"ק תרומה, נהניתי לקרות בו שמבקר הוא את הוו"ח אי"א נו"נ בעל מדות ורב פעלים... שי', וכבר ידוע דרז"ל (סוטה יד, א) אחרי ה' אלקיכם תלכו כו' בקר חולים, עיי"ש, אשר לדעת בעל הלכות גדולות הוא מצוה דאורייתא, ועייג"כ שרש ראשון בס' המצות להרמב"ם ובמפרשים שם, ועפמ"ש ומבשרך לא תתעלם, בודאי ובמכש"כ מבקר ג"כ חולי עצמו, וכמרז"ל (ירושלמי שבת פרק יד, הלכה ג) חולי זה יצר הרע. ומדתו של הקב"ה מדה כנגד מדה, שכמו שע"י ביקור חולים מקילים מחולי חבירו, תתגדל סייעתא דשמיא בביקור חולי עצמו וכמרז"ל שהקב"ה עוזרו, ומהנכון שילמוד מאמר דח"י אלול תרנ"ג (נדפס בקונטרס ח"י אלול ה'תש"ג) שבטח האברך... שי' יוכל להמציאו לו.

כן בטח יבאר לו הנ"ל ע"ד שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, וישמור אותם עכ"פ מכאן ולהבא, שהם בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים.
