You mention the practice of wearing a belt — the gartel* — during prayer. Chassidim* have the custom of beginning to do so after marriage. Nevertheless, one may ask whether those who, for whatever reason (having previously followed other customs), began wearing it before that time should change their practice.
Granted, in this matter one must avoid any ostentatious behavior, and above all one must not distinguish oneself from other Chassidim. You may therefore wear this belt under your jacket. If, however, you have already discontinued your previous practice, you must obtain permission to do so from a rabbinical court of three judges, as is the case for any positive custom that one has practiced at least three times (the Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "See the Shaar HaKollel*, chapter 41, on the eve of Rosh Hashanah*, paragraph 3").
You ask me why one begins wearing this belt for prayer specifically after marriage. I do not have a definitive explanation on this matter. Nevertheless, this is a custom of Chassidim, and you will see what is said on the subject in the Tur* and Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 91, with its commentaries. One thereby fulfills the precept: "Prepare yourself before your Elokim*, Israel."
This can be compared to the donning of a Tallis*, a Mitzvah* that allows one to reveal upon oneself the Sovereignty of Hashem, as explained in the Tanya*, at the beginning of chapter 41. Because of this commonality, one begins wearing both at the same time — after marriage. Concerning the Tallis, an allusion to this may be found in Tractate Kiddushin 29b.
Other reasons could also be given, but they will not be elaborated here.
Several communities in Poland also have the custom of beginning to wear a gartel before marriage. Likewise, there is a custom of wearing two belts, as explained by the Menachem Tzion, cited by the Taamei HaMinhagim*, volume 3. Consult also Tractate Shabbos, chapter 16, Mishnah 4 (the Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "This is also the origin of the Chassidic custom of wearing a Kippah* under one's hat, as stated in Tractate Chullin 138a"). But these two customs (wearing the gartel before marriage and wearing two belts) were not adopted by the Chassidim.
No doubt you are making proper and Chassidic use of the days of Purim*, which are approaching. The connection to what has been said above can be deduced from various texts of Chassidus* discussing the festival of Purim.
