Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter, which was undated. You describe to me everything you have experienced. The central idea of your account is as follows: you are struggling against the evil inclination* that every Jew possesses, and until now you have not yet achieved success in this battle. On various occasions, you have stumbled.

Now, it is clear that every Jew possesses the forces necessary to be victorious in his struggle. Sometimes, as is the case in a physical battle, one falls and the other rises. Other times, the opposite is true. But in any event, the final victory is assured.

It is stated that "none of us shall be cast away." Despair and resignation are stratagems of the evil inclination, which seeks to imprison a person within its domain and its net. Consequently, you will establish your fixed study sessions in the revealed dimension of the Torah* and in Chassidus*, and you will fulfill the Mitzvos* in the best possible manner.

Obviously, you will accomplish this more easily by being in the Yeshivah* and by genuinely submitting to the directives of its administration. In the end, you will succeed in extracting yourself from the mire and you will see the light in your life.

במענה על מכתבו - מבלי הוראת זמן הכתיבה - בו כותב אודות מה שעבר עליו ותוכן הפנימי בזה הוא, שבמלחמתו עם היצר הרע שישנו אצל כל אחד מישראל, הנה עד עתה לא הצליח בזה, ונכשל בכמה ענינים.

והנה ברור הדבר אשר לכל אחד מישראל ניתנו כחות מספיקים לנצחון במלחמה הנ"ל, אף שלפעמים וכדרך במלחמה גשמית, זה נופל וזה קם ולפעמים להיפך, אבל סו"ס הנצחון בטוח, וכמ"ש לבלתי ידח ממנו נדח, ונמיכת רוח ויאוש ה"ה מתכסיסי היצר הרע לצוד האדם ברשותו ורשתו, ולכן יקבע שיעורו בלימוד תורת הנגלה ופנימיות התורה והידור בקיום המצות, ומובן שיקל זה עליו בהרבה אם יהי' בישיבה ויקיים בקבלת עול אמיתי את ציוויי הנהלת הישיבה, ואז סוף סוף יצא מהטיט והבוץ ויראה אור בחייו.
