Greetings and blessings,
I have not received letters from you for a very long time, although from time to time I obtain news of you indirectly. Obviously, this is not sufficient, and no doubt you will make up for this at the next opportunity.
You have had the merit of taking advantage of the opportunity that Divine Providence* offered you to exert a positive influence on those around you, drawing them closer to Chassidus*, its practices, and its customs. Without a doubt, this merit will assist you in your own service of Hashem, in the three domains of Torah*, prayer*, and good deeds*.
You tell me that devoting yourself to the service of Hashem of the heart — which is fervent prayer — prevents or even works against the other domain of this service, which is Torah study. I am surprised by this. How can one think that a Mitzvah* of the Holy One, blessed be He, works against another Mitzvah? Moreover, in this case, we are speaking of Mitzvos that have a general, all-encompassing scope.
On the contrary, we find that Abba Binyamin* asked Hashem that "his prayer be near his bed" (i.e., immediately upon waking). Indeed, the Torah study that follows prayer is much more powerful than study not preceded by prayer.
Furthermore, various texts of Chassidus emphasize that the Halachah* follows the view of Beis Hillel*, because he is humble and agreeable, even though Beis Shammai* was sharper. Now, Halachah presupposes profound understanding (and thus should theoretically follow the view of the sharper one). It is not a mere ruling. Obviously, all of this is in addition to what the Eitz Chaim* states about the immense harm one causes oneself by separating the Tree of Life from the Tree of Knowledge (i.e., prayer from Torah). Consult that text.
Concerning the third domain — that of Tzedakah* and good deeds — the beginning of Torah Or* explains that by acting in this manner, one obtains "a brain and a heart a thousand times more refined." A note of the Tzemach Tzedek*, printed at the beginning of Likkutei Torah* on three Parshiyos*, specifies that the number one thousand is by no means an exaggeration in the colloquial sense. This number is very precise.
Granted, one can observe that some are more drawn to the revealed dimension of the Torah and others to Chassidus, but this is by no means contradictory. Indeed, Tikkunei Zohar*, cited by Iggeres HaKodesh*, distinguishes "men of Torah" from "men of good deeds." Consult also the explanation of the statement of our Sages* that "one who says he possesses only Torah... (does not even possess Torah)," in the Kuntres Eitz HaChaim*, in the note to that text, and in that of Iggeres HaKodesh, chapter 9.
With my blessing of success in all that has been said, and for you to give me good news as soon as possible,
