Igrot Kodesh · Letter 335 — Talmudic Analysis: Rashi on Eldad and Medad
Volume 2 · Letter 169
By the grace of Hashem*,
Purim Katan* 5708,
To the learned Chassid*, Hashem-fearing and devoted to communal needs, Rav M. H., the shochet*[1],
I greet you and bless you,
You ask me about Rashi*'s commentary on tractate Sanhedrin* 17a, according to which Eldad and Medad* did not leave their tent[2], not out of humility[3], but out of fear of not being chosen by lot[4]. This contradicts Rashi*'s commentary on the Torah*, in the verse Bamidbar* 11:27.
A) In his Torah* commentary, Rashi* cites the Sifri*, which records the opinion of Rabbi Shimon*, which appears in the Gemara* and contradicts that of the other Tanna*, whose opinion Rashi* comments upon in that tractate.
The addenda to Rashi*'s commentary, which are printed in the tractate Sanhedrin* of the Ein Yaakov*, confirm this interpretation. The Yalkut Shimoni*, however, cites at that same reference another explanation, according to which there was no lottery at all[5]. Six members of each tribe and four of the tribe of Levi* were therefore designated by name.
B) How does Rashi* deduce the interpretation of the other Tanna*'s words? In truth, this is quite evident, for that Sage holds that there was indeed a lottery, but that Eldad and Medad* did not take part in it and did not even go to the place where it was held.
Now, had they acted thus because they did not consider themselves worthy of such a distinction, they should have known that this lottery was in the hands of Hashem* and entrusted themselves to His decision. Why, then, would they not have participated? On the contrary, they were obligated to do so!
C) How does the other Tanna* deduce that the conduct of Eldad and Medad* did not stem from humility — quite the contrary?
He finds it difficult to accept that both of them remained in the camp, having been designated by lot to be among the elders. For if Hashem* had decided to grant them prophecy*, could they refuse it?
The dispute between this Tanna* and Rabbi Shimon* is thus the same as the one recorded in tractate Berachot* 7a, concerning the following question: when Moshe* covered his face[6], was he punished or rewarded?
The one who holds that he acted well argues that only Moshe* could aspire to such divine revelation, which another prophet could not have received, as the Maharsha* emphasizes. Eldad and Medad*, however, were to receive the spirit that Moshe* stirred among the seventy elders. It is clear that they could not refuse such prophecy*, Hashem* having chosen them to entrust it to them. This is the view of the other Tanna*.
Rabbi Shimon*, for his part, holds that those seventy elders also had to judge, teach, and lead the people of Israel*. That was the reason for their refusal. But the responsa* Lachmei Todah*, citing the Zohar*, states that those elders did not judge. The divine presence was revealed only through them as intermediaries. One could elaborate all of this, but this is not the occasion to do so.
With wishes for all good,
Rav Menachem Schneerson*,
