To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Chaim Zalman (the Rav Ch. Z. Kremer), nicknamed Chazak* (a term meaning "strong," formed from the initials of Chaim Zalman Kremer),

Greetings and blessings,

I was gratified to learn of the Melaveh Malkah* that is being organized in your honor, for the many years of activity you have undertaken within the association of Chassidei Chabad* and on behalf of the Lubavitch* Yeshivah*.

Such a gathering is important, for it demonstrates that the paramount character of your work and of the goal you have set for yourself has been recognized and is appreciated at its true value. Thus, one can have good hope that this sentiment will continue to prevail among the directors and directresses, among all those who will take part in this Melaveh Malkah, and that it will express itself in concrete action — through strengthened and expanded activity, on the part of all in general and of each one in particular.

This Melaveh Malkah will take place at the conclusion of the upcoming Shabbos*, Parshas Zachor*, a few days before Purim*. The gathering is therefore directly connected to this event, according to the Chassidic interpretation of the saying: "One must live with the times."

One of the important teachings that the Megillah* conveys is the following: The Jews — men, women, and children — faced, at that time, the terrible danger of extermination, Heaven forbid, throughout an entire year. Yet they did not rely on the important connections they had forged with the authorities, on Queen Esther* and on Mordechai*, who "sat at the king's gate." They understood that the salvation of the entire people depended on the salvation of the Jewish children, whom Mordechai assembled in great numbers, to whom he taught Torah* and Mitzvos*, as the Gemara* and the Midrash* recount in detail.

Naturally, this is still the case, and even more so, in the present era. We are in a free country, and the salvation of the children does not require the same spirit of self-sacrifice* as in that era. The opportunities available are numerous. One must therefore remember that the children are the salvation and the continuity of our people — not only in the moral dimension, but also in a physical and material sense.

The date on which this letter is written, the 9th of Adar, is the date of the arrival in America of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. He emphasized the importance of what has just been said for American Jewry. Upon his arrival here, before he even rested or organized himself even minimally, he founded the Lubavitch Yeshivah and other institutions, providing a holy and pure education.

On this occasion, I would like to recall that you yourself, Rav Chaim Zalman, and your dear brothers, have at every moment been from the outset in the front ranks of those who assisted him. I wish you the ability to celebrate a jubilee of fruitful activities, ever increasing. In this way, you will forge the channels and vessels that convey the blessing of Hashem, material and spiritual.

התכנסות כזו היא חשובה ,כיון שהיא מוכיחה ,שהחשיבות של

העבודה ושל המטרה הגדולה הזו ,זוכה להכרה והערכה .ויש לקוות,

שהלגש הזה ינהיג גם להבא את המנהלים והמנהלות והמשתתפים

במלוה מלכה ,ויקבל ביטוי במעשים בפועל ,בעבודה מוגדלת ומורחבת

של כל אחד ואחד בכלל ובפרט.

כיון שהמלוה מלכה נערכת במוצאי שבת קודש הקרוב פ׳ זכור,

כמה ימים לפני פורים ,יש לזמן קשר חשוב עם המאורע ,כפי שחסידים

מבינים את הפתגם ש״צריך לחיות עם הזמן״ .אחת הנקודות החשובות

ביותר שהמגילה מלמדת אותנו היא ,שבני ישראל בימים ההם ,למראה

הסכנה הגדולה של השמדה ח״ו שסיכנה את עמנו ,אנשים נשים וטף,

שנה שלימה ,לא סמכו על הקשרים הגדולים שהיו להם עם המלכות,

ע״י אסתר המלכה וע״י מרדכי היושב בשער המלך ,אלא הבינו,

שההצלה של העם היהודי תלוי׳ בהצלה של ילדי ישראל ,שלכן אסף

מרדכי היהודי את ילדי ישראל בהמוניהם ולימד אותם תורה ומצוות,

כמסופר בפרטות בגמרא ומדרש.

ברור ,שגם בזמן הזה כן הוא ועוד יותר ,ובהיותנו במדינה חפשית,

שם לא נדרשת אותה מידה של מסירות נפש כדי להציל ילדי ישראל כמו

בימים ההם ,והיכן שהאפשרויות גדולות ,ודאי שיש לזכור ,שהילדים

הם העתיד וההצלה של עמנו ,לא רק במובן רוחני ,אלא גם במובן פיזי

גשמי גרידא.

היום ,ט׳ אדר ,כאשר המכתב נכתב ,הוא היום שבו כ״ק מו״ח

אדמו״ר זצוקללה״ה נבג״מ זי״ע בא לאמריקה ,והדגיש את האמור לעיל

לפני יהודי אמריקה ,בכך שתיכף לאחר בואו לכאן ,עוד לפני שנח או

הסתדר בעצמו ,אפילו באופן הכי בסיסי ,יסד את ישיבת ליובאוויטש

ומוסדות נוספים לחינוך הכשר והטהור.

ובהזדמנות זו רצוני להזכיר שר׳ חיים זלמן ,ואחיו החשובים שיחיו

התייצבו מהרגע הראשון ,בשורות הראשונות ,לסייע בעבודה כל העת.

הנני מאחל לו שיוכל לחגוג יובלות רבים של פעילות נושאת פירות,

מוסיף והולך ,שזה יוצר את הצנורות והכלים לברכות השי״ת בגשמיות

וברוחניות.

החגיגה חשובה במיוחד כי היא מוכיחה ,שהמנהלים והחברים

מעריכים את החשיבות של בית הכנסת ,בפרט בית כנסת הנושא את שם

האר״י ז״ל ,שהאיר את הדרך של עבודת השם ,עבודה בשמחה ומסירת

נפש ,בחמימות ולבביות חסידית.

כיון שהחגיגה מתקיימת יום לפני שקוראים את המגילה ,יש לזמן

קשר חשוב עם המאורע ,כפי שחסידים מבינים את הפתגם ש״צריך

לחיות עם הזמן״ .אחת הנקודות החשובות ביותר שפורים מלמד אותנו

היא ,שבני ישראל בימים ההם ,למראה הסכנה הגדולה של השמדה ח״ו

שסיכנה שנה שלימה את העם היהודי ,אנשים נשים וטף ,לא סמכו על

ברור ,שגם כעת כן הוא ועוד יותר ,ובפרט במדינה חפשית ,היכן

שהאפשרויות להציל ילדי ישראל ~ ברוחניות ~ הן גדולות ,והיכן שלכל

אחד יש הזדמנות ליטול חלק בעבודת ההצלה הגדולה ,שבזה תלוי עתיד

העם היהודי לא רק ברוחניות אלא גם הקיום הפיזי של עמנו ,בכל מקום

שהם.
