Greetings and blessings,

You mention the Chassidic gatherings* (see letter no. 3097 on this subject) of 19 Kislev* (the liberation of the Alter Rebbe* from the czarist prisons) and the day of the Hilulah* (of the Frierdiker Rebbe*) on 10 Shevat*. The description of the second gathering shows that you are not yet making the necessary efforts to draw toward the customs, practices, and study of Chassidus* those who, for the time being, are still on the outside.

Granted, it is possible to extend mitigating circumstances to you, by explaining that it is stated regarding the domain of holiness*: "I will drive him (the evil) out little by little from before you" — meaning that advancement must be gradual. But even taking this principle into account, the progress should have been greater than what it currently is. May Hashem grant that, in the future, the development proceed in the proper manner.

You mention the problem of the synagogues* and you tell me that if you go to one on Shabbos*, the class given in the other will be canceled. On the other hand, if you go to the second, it is not certain that there will be ten people for the prayer in the first. It is clear that a way must be found to ensure both. Shabbos lasts more than twenty-five hours, which is enough time to do both. And, on the contrary, may Hashem grant — as must be the case in the domain of holiness — that one domain strengthens the other.

You mention the customs relating to the eleven months and the year (of mourning). For the most part, these are printed in the pamphlets published in recent years for 2 Nissan* and 10 Shevat (the dates of the Hilulah of the Rebbe Rashab* and the Frierdiker Rebbe).

You are considering separating physically, if she (the wife of the recipient of this letter) gives you her consent. This does not satisfy me, for not only is such consent rarely given freely, but furthermore, one may ask whether such an attitude brings purity, whether it purifies one's thoughts, or whether, on the contrary, the opposite is true, Heaven forbid. And it is known that "one who has bread in his basket is not hungry."

Everything therefore depends on the thoughts of the heart, and in my view, this is not the way you will obtain what you are seeking. Consult also the Torah Or*, Megillas Esther*, page 92d, which states: "This is not so, for this is significant, and this significance is felt Above as well."

With my blessing to give good news of all that has been said,

M. Schneerson
