Igrot Kodesh · Letter 333 — Girls' Torah Education in Prague — Stewardship After the Shoah

To the Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav A. Horowitz,

I greet and bless you,

You are no doubt aware of the girls' schools that were founded at the direction of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita. One of them is located in Prague. Now Rav C. M. Kalmenson(1), who developed and directed this school, has now left Prague.

We would therefore like to ask you to take an interest in this institution, to devote your time and energy to it, so that it functions normally as my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita, its founder, wishes — that it develop quantitatively by increasing the number of its students, and qualitatively by developing their knowledge, their fear of Hashem, and their Chassidic* conduct.

You will surely maintain written correspondence with us regarding all of this.

Various texts underscore the importance of girls' education. But the most tangible proof of it is everyday life, which has shown how primordial and fundamental it is, especially in our era of destruction(2), during which it is important to build in new places and under entirely foreign conditions.

Preserving one's moral integrity and the tradition of our ancestors therefore requires a particular effort on the part of all family members. It is no longer sufficient to indicate only to the head of the family what he must do.

In Midrash Shemot Rabbah*, chapter 28:2, our Sages emphasize that one must first address the women and only then the men. This is how Torah* perpetuates itself. The lesson that flows from this for all generations is quite clear.

בטח נודע לו ע"ד בתי הספר לנערות אשר נוסדו ע"פ הצעת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א ואחת מהן בעיר פראג. והנה עתה אחרי שנסע משם הרש"מ שי' קאלמענסאן, שהוא השתדל בשיכלול הנהלת ביה"ס הנ"ל, הננו לבקשו אשר כבו' יתן שימת לב הראוי' לענין נעלה זה ויקדיש מעתו ומרצו להשגיח באופן המתאים שתהי' הנהגת ביה"ס כפי הראוי ע"פ רצון מייסדה הוא כ"ק מו"ח אד"ש ויתגדל ויתרחב הן בכמות, מספר התלמידות, הן באיכות, ידיעות התלמידות והתפתחותן מיוסדות על יר"ש ומידות חסידות. ובודאי יעמוד בקישור מכתבים אתנו בנוגע לכל הנ"ל.

גודל ערך חינוך הבנות נתבאר כבר בכ"מ, והביאור היותר מוכיח הם החיים גופא שהראו חשיבות ועקריות דבר זה, ובפרט בימינו אלו ימי הירוס והכרח הבנין במקומות חדשות ובתנאים חדשים וזרים לגמרי, אשר השימור על הצורה הרצוי' ומסורת אבות דורשת השתדלות מיוחדת מצד כל בני הבית ואין מספיק כלל ציווי ופקודת ראש הבית בלבד.

ואמרז"ל (שמות רבה פכ"ח, ב) שבמתן תורה צ"ל תחילה אמירה לנשים ואח"כ לאנשים ואז התורה מתקיימת. וההוראה לדורות מובנת.
