To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Chaim (the Rav Ch. Serebrianski, of Melbourne, Australia),

Greetings and blessings,

I duly received your letter of the 26th of Teves*, whose transit was longer than usual. I took note with satisfaction of your efforts to develop the Yeshivah* Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak of Melbourne. No doubt you will continue your efforts in this direction and will even redouble your ardor in the future.

Indeed, there is good hope, with the help of Hashem, that this Yeshivah will succeed in introducing fundamental changes in the practices of the city and of the country. Our holy masters teach that "everything is determined by the beginning" (literally, "everything continues in the manner in which it began"). This beginning, this foundation, is therefore particularly important.

Fortunate is the lot of each and every one of those who do all that is in their power. Without a doubt, there will be fulfilled in them the ruling of the Alter Rebbe*, at the beginning of his Torah Or*, stated regarding the verse: "Tzedakah* elevates a people." This will be so materially and spiritually.

נתקבל מכתבו מכ"ו טבת - אשר הלך בדרכו יתר על הרגיל - נהניתי לקרות בו אודות עבודתו בהתפתחות ישיבת אהלי יוסף יצחק אשר במעלבורן, ובודאי גם להבא יעשה בזה ועוד יוסיף אומץ, כי בעזה"י יש לקוות שישיבה הנ"ל תצליח לשנות ענינים עיקרים בהנהגת העיר וגם המדינה, וע"פ מאמר רבותינו הק' ווי מען שטעלט זיך אוועק אזוי גייט דאס, הנה נוגע ביותר ההתחלה הזה בראשית התיסדותה, ואשרי חלקו של כל אחד ואחת העושה בזה ככל יכולתו, ובודאי יקוים בכל או"א מהם פסק רבנו הזקן בתחלת ספרו תורה אור בפירוש הכתוב וצדקה תרומם גוי שהוא הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות.
