To the eminent Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem

and devotes himself to communal needs,

Greetings and blessings,

After a long interruption, I received with pleasure your letter, written at the conclusion of Shabbos Mishpatim*, in which you tell me that everything concerning the Yeshivah* is proceeding fruitfully.

To someone such as yourself, it is unnecessary to emphasize and elaborate upon what the Sages* say: "One who tells you he did not exert effort yet achieved success — do not believe him." Now, logic indicates that when the result is proportionate to the effort, one cannot speak of true success. Success must multiply the result manyfold.

May Hashem grant that this be so in the three domains, which are: Mitzvos*; Torah* — preceded by a blessing*, as explained by Rabbeinu Yonah* (the Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "Consult Rabbeinu Nissim* on Tractate Nedarim 81a"), or more precisely, the Beis Chadash* on the Tur Orach Chaim*, chapter 47 — which introduces the third domain: fervent prayer*.

From time to time, one must meditate upon the concepts that arouse love and fear of the One Who gives the Torah, as explained in the Tanya*, at the end of chapter 41: "Likewise, in the middle of the day..." This applies equally to a bill of divorce*, in fulfillment of the precept "Turn away from evil," and to the Sefer Torah*, which corresponds to "do good." (In writing a bill of divorce, one must think of the man and woman who are separating; likewise, one must write a Sefer Torah with the intention of conferring upon it the sanctity* that it must possess.) And one should do this (i.e., meditate upon all of this) "at least once every hour." Please consult that text.

The communal merit depends on you and on those who assist you. You will guide your students on the path of life.

לאחרי הפסק הארוך נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מעש"ק משפטים, בו כותב אשר הענינים בהישיבה מתנהגים בהצלחה, ובודאי לדכוותי' למותר להעיר ולדייק אשר כיון שכבר פסקו רז"ל לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין, מובן ע"פ שכל שלמציאה בערך היגיעה אין נזקקים להצלחה, וההצלחה באה להוסיף כ"פ ככה נוסף על מה שמגיע לפי ערך היגיעה, ויה"ר שיהי' זה בשלשת הקוים היינו במצות, בתורה (בהקדמת ברכת התורה וע"פ המבואר ברבנו יונה* והורחב בב"ח בטור או"ח סי' מ"ז שלזה הכרח) בעבודת התפלה, והתבוננות מזמן לזמן בדברים המביאים לאהבתו ויראתו של נותן התורה, וע"פ המבואר בתניא סוף פרק מ"א וכן באמצע היום כו' וכמו בגט (הקו דסור מרע) וספר תורה (הקו דועשה טוב) וכו' בכל שעה עכ"פ, יעוין שם, וזכות הרבים תלוי בכת"ר ועוזריו, להדריך את התלמידים בדרך חיים זו...
