Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3318 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 10 · Letter 355
B"H,
1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Adar 5715,
Brooklyn, New York,
To my close relative, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
possessing correct perception, multiplying positive accomplishments,
versed in the sciences, of an illustrious family,
Rav Gad (Rav G. Frumkin, of Yerushalayim*; see Letter #2817),
I greet you and bless you,
I received with pleasure your letter of 24 Teves, the date of the Hilulah* of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, as well as your book "The Way of the Judge in Jerusalem." I thank you very much for this gift.
It seems to me that I have already written to you (see Letter #2393) about how important and essential it is to record testimonies relating to events of the past. This is especially the case in our era, when a current of thought asserts that our history begins from now. According to some, this applies to everything that concerns us. According to others, it applies only to a large part of what constitutes our life. In any event, both agree that one should not take the past into account — moreover, that it is a burden from which one should free oneself as quickly as possible. It is difficult to say more about what is painful, and to someone like you, it would surely be unnecessary.
You ask me why I introduce my letter to you with the expression "To my close relative." I rely, in this, on my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. It seems to me that he himself wrote to you in these terms (see Igrot Kodesh of the Frierdiker Rebbe, Volume 3, Letter #834, and Volume 5, Letter #1417). In his book ("The Descendants of the Family of the Rav of Liadi"), Mr. Slonim speaks of family members and cites some who bore the name Frumkin. Perhaps this is the origin of this kinship.
The last point, which is of greatest interest: you tell me that your grandson, Alon Yaakov, celebrates his Bar Mitzvah* (literally, "receives the yoke of the Mitzvos"). May Hashem grant that his parents lead him to Torah*, to the chuppah*, and to good deeds. You yourself will witness all of this and derive true satisfaction — a Jewish satisfaction, in the spirit of Tradition.
Moreover, you tell me that your son-in-law is Attorney General. He is therefore charged with fulfilling the directive: "You shall destroy the evil from your midst." But in accordance with Tradition, this precept is fulfilled when one prepares minds to exclude offenses and transgressions. Thus it is said: "The illness that I sent upon Egypt, I will not place upon you" — from the outset — "for I am Hashem Who heals you." Such therapy is preventive, and it applies equally in the moral domain, as the Rambam* explains at length in his Eight Chapters.
Our Sages have expounded their views on this matter in Tana D'vei Eliyahu Rabbah, Chapter 11. They explain there that the true mission of the Sanhedrin* is not to wait for a suspect or a guilty party to be brought before them for judgment in accordance with the principles of the Torah. This mission consists, in fact, of "tying ropes to their loins, lifting their garments above their knees, and going to all the cities of Israel — one day to Lachish, one to Beis El, one to Chevron, one to Yerushalayim*, and also to all other places — in order to deliver teaching to the children of Israel, so that the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He, be magnified and sanctified in all the worlds He created, from one end of the earth to the other."
This is the reason why, as the Mishnah* states at the end of the first chapter of Tractate Makkos, a Sanhedrin* that pronounces a death sentence once every seven years — or even, according to Rabbi Avraham ibn Ezra, every seventy years — is called "murderous." Yet this refers to a virtuous Sanhedrin*, as my father-in-law, the Rebbe, explains at length in his discourse of Shabbos Teshuvah 5690 (1929), printed in Likkutei Dibburim, Chapter 18.
With my consideration, my respects, and my blessing, and in expectation of your good tidings,
I enclose the pamphlet published on the occasion of the Hilulah* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, celebrated on 10 Shevat. It is a new edition that will surely interest you.
