Volume 10 · Letter 354

B"H,

1st day of Rosh Chodesh* Adar 5715,
Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your two letters of 25 Shevat and to the one that preceded them.

With everything you write about this person, you place yourself in the position of someone who would reproach a sick person for having a high temperature. It happens that this is precisely his illness, and the only solution is to find a medicine and bring it to him. Indeed, the fever prevents him from leaving his house (literally, "his four cubits"). Subsequently, one can seek the means and measures to take so that this patient's condition is profoundly changed and the treatment takes effect.

It is clear that the same applies to a Jew who replaces the fervor (Chom, which also means temperature/fever) of the Divine soul with that which one feels for the "other side." In such a case, it is useless to argue with him. Our Sages say that "a person commits a sin only when seized by a spirit of folly." One is then incapable of accepting a logical reproach, and in such a case, the appropriate treatment must be found. In fact, this treatment is already taught in the books of Jewish ethics and especially in those of Chassidus*.

You must take into account that one of the symptoms of his illness is his imprisonment within the four cubits of the "old and foolish king" (the yetzer hara*). The obligation to love one's fellow leaves no alternative but to bring him the medicine in this very domain (that of the yetzer hara*), to find the means of introducing it deeply within him. Thus, without a doubt, it will take effect, for if "a little light repels much darkness," how much more can a great deal of light accomplish.

And if there is no other way, it is permitted not to inform the patient that he is being administered the medicine capable of bringing about his recovery. He will therefore think, in the way he currently perceives the situation, that he is being offered sweets. Someone like you surely understands what all of this means, without any further clarification being necessary.

Despite all of this, it is quite clear that one must feel deep compassion for those who are placed under the influence of this sick person. But in any case, they will not be saved by leaving their spiritual guide in the state in which he currently finds himself.

May Hashem grant you the merit and the success of being the emissary who will announce good tidings to me regarding all that has been said. I thank you in advance.

With my blessing,
