Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3313 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 10 · Letter 350 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

B"H,

29 Shevat 5715,
Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Yirmiyahu (Rav Y. Alay; see Letter #3147),

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 22 Shevat, in which I see no reason justifying your having ceased to give me news for so long. I learned therein with satisfaction that you are earning a proper livelihood and — of primary importance — that you are also continuing your communal activities.

I have good hope that you will seize every opportunity that presents itself to strengthen and spread Jewish observance and the spark of Yiddishkeit* that is found in everything, to the extent of the influence you exert. Your action will be permeated with Chassidic warmth and enthusiasm. You will also prepare your students to receive the teaching of Chassidus* and its customs — not only in the practice of Mitzvos*, but also in daily life, in all permitted domains.

You surely know the saying that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, often repeated to us: "What is forbidden is banned, and what is permitted is unnecessary." And one makes the mistake of thinking that at the present time, people are not ready to accept this principle. The opposite is true.

Moreover, in recent years, many Jews have been disappointed by the idols commonly known as secular ideals, and they seek truth and life — not in cemeteries but in shuls* and in houses of study. Sometimes, a little encouragement or even a simple allusion suffices to penetrate further into the four cubits of Torah* and prayer, and to draw along the members of one's family. As you know, the Holy One, blessed be He, Master of the entire world in the most literal sense, says: "Open for Me like the point of a needle, and I will open for you like the gateway of the Sanctuary."

I am somewhat surprised that you do not mention, among your public classes, a course on the practical laws applicable in daily life. You speak only of the Chayei Adam on the laws of Shabbos*, and it is clear that this is not sufficient. Ultimately, it is the deed that is essential, as it is said: "Fear Hashem and observe His Mitzvos*, for this is the entire purpose of man."

I have already written (see Letter #3048) in various places, or explained orally, the great importance of disseminating knowledge of the laws of blessings, of interruptions during prayer, and of what may not be carried on Shabbos*. The ignorance in these areas is distressing. And if previous generations were already invited to take action in this regard — as indicated by the laws of Torah study of the Alter Rebbe* and the introduction to his Shulchan Aruch* — how much more must this be the case in our era, after the disruption and confusion (caused by the war).

Moreover, the younger generation does not observe a good example in this regard, neither in the street nor at home. Study — including in the most basic areas, and these in particular — is therefore indispensable, in the school and in the house of study. It is said in this regard that "unwitting transgression is considered as deliberate." You should do everything in your power, at least from now on, to disseminate these laws by having them studied in the proper manner. And Hashem will grant you success in this Divine mission.

I am surprised that you say nothing about the Hilulah* (of the Frierdiker Rebbe) of 10 Shevat, even though this date has passed, so that a prayer on the subject is... (unnecessary). May Hashem grant that the deficiency be only in your letter, but not in actual practice.

I would like to know how the Chassidim* of your country are faring. No doubt you correspond with them, or even meet them. I thank you for responding to me on this point in your next letter.

With my blessing that you give me good tidings,
