I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 7 Shevat and to the preceding one, which I received with much delay. You tell me that no suitable match has yet been proposed to you. I am surprised, for "the Holy One, blessed be He, demands only in proportion to the strengths that each person possesses."

One must therefore act with eagerness — that is, forge a vessel — and one then receives from Hashem the appropriate blessing. This is particularly true when it comes to becoming engaged, for it is said: "An intelligent woman is a gift from Hashem."

I am therefore fairly certain that you are not attending to this matter as you should. Our Sages say that one must search for a wife as one would search for something one has lost. When a proposal is made to you, you consider it superficially and do not go beyond the minimum obligation.

It is therefore not surprising that such a minimal effort on your part produces no concrete result. And it is unnecessary to say more regarding what is entirely evident. Indeed, "it is not good for man to be alone," as various texts establish.

May Hashem grant that at least from now on — that is, from the moment you receive this letter — you act in this matter in the proper way. Thus, Hashem will grant you success.

With my blessing to give good tidings at the soonest regarding all that has been said,

במענה על מכתבו מז' שבט, וכן הקודם לו שנתקבל באיחור זמן רב - הנה מ"ש שעדיין לא שמע ע"ד הצעה מתאימה בשבילו בעניני שידוכין, פלא הדבר, כי הרי אין הקב"ה מבקש אלא לפי כחו של אחד וכשעושים במרץ המתאים, היינו עשיית הכלי משפיעים מלמעלה הנצרך בזה ובפרט בעניני שידוכין, וכמ"ש ומה' אשה משכלת, ולכן קרוב בעיני בודאי שאינו מתעסק בזה כדרשת רז"ל כאדם המחזר אחרי אבדתו וגם כשמציעים ה"ה בגדר דמהיכי תיתי ומה היא חובתי ואעשנה ותו לא, ובמילא אין פלא שכשהאתערותא דלתתא באופן כזה אין תוצאות בהנוגע לפועל, ולמותר להאריך בדבר המובן ופשוט אשר לא טוב היות האדם כו' וכמבואר בכו"כ מקומות, ויה"ר שעכ"פ מכאן ולהבא היינו תיכף לקבלת מכתב זה יעשה בהנ"ל כדבעי ויהי' בהצלחה...
