Igrot Kodesh · Letter 3310 — Prayer

Volume 10 · Letter 347

B"H,

28 Shevat 5715,
Brooklyn,

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 24 Shevat. You surely know the following story, which I did not, however, hear from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. I therefore do not know its source, but its content is logical and true.

A young Chassid* multiplied the preparations for prayer to the point of exceeding the time for the reading of Shema Yisrael* and the prayer of the Shemoneh Esrei* (the eighteen blessings). At that point, he began his prayer and then completed it in very short time. It was pointed out to him that those who prayed at length could perhaps afford a preparation of several hours, even at the risk of missing the time for Shema Yisrael* and prayer. How, however, could one prepare for hours and run such a risk for a prayer of only a few minutes?

You will forgive me for saying that the same applies to your letter. Between this letter and the previous one, there was a particularly long interruption. Now, this interruption would have been justified if you had gathered several ideas requiring profound reflection, great attention, and detailed writing. How, however, can such a long interruption be followed by a letter with such brief content? All of this is contradictory, and may Hashem grant that you write to me very soon, with all the appropriate detail.

More generally, I do not know what words to use to explain to each and every one of you the terms of the Mishnah* according to which "I was created solely to serve my Creator." This teaching does not apply only in domains that defy understanding, like the Kohen Gadol* who wore eight garments of gold thread. In fact, it concerns each and every one of us, in our daily existence, in our activities that everyone considers obscure and that are trodden underfoot.

As for teachers, this applies, in the simplest sense, to the insignificant details of daily organization. If these details are well organized, you will constitute a blessed generation — the generation of the Redemption — which will go, together with you, to greet our righteous Moshiach*. And you will say: "Behold, these are the ones we have raised."

In expectation of your good tidings regarding all that has been said, and sending you my blessing that you observe success in your concrete action,
