Igrot Kodesh · Letter 331 — Tanya — Vitality of the Nails and the Chain of Souls Through Generations

Volume 2 · Letter 165

By the grace of Hashem,

Second day of Rosh Chodesh*

Adar Rishon* 5708,

To the Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav I. Altein(1),

I greet and bless you,

I am responding to your letter:

A) We have already written to Rav N. K.

B) The second chapter of the Tanya* states that 'the vitality of the child's nails comes from the brain.' It is quite clear that this refers to the child's own brain and not to that of the father, as can be verified concretely. Furthermore the Tanya continues: 'The vitality of the various parts of the soul of the ignorant (who are the "nails" of the Jewish people) comes from those of the leaders of the generation (comparable to the brain).'

Note: The soul of the ignorant, by attaching itself to that of the learned, returns to its first source, the Divine Presence. One might conclude that the nail of the son, by receiving its vitality from its brain, is united with the seminal drop that originated from the father's brain(2). In fact one may think that this is indeed the case, since the Gemara* specifies that the child's brain is indeed formed from this drop. It therefore undergoes no modification(3), so that the father's brain perpetuates itself in that of the son. Then, when the nails receive their vitality from the son's brain, they attach themselves, through it, to that of the father.

But one may also think that there is a difference between the image given by the Tanya* and the concept it is meant to illustrate. Indeed, the child acquires an existence different from that of his father. He is therefore not obligated to give his life(4). In this sense he differs from the soul(5), as Likkutei Torah* underscores.

C) Regarding the third chapter of the Tanya*, you ask me why one speaks of 'force' for Chochmah*, the attribute of intellectual discovery, while this term is not used for Binah*, the attribute of reasoned analysis.

The word 'force' has two meanings:

1. We speak first of all of the forces of the soul which are, as it were, its limbs. Thus chapter 51 of the Tanya* speaks of the 613 forces of the soul. At this level no difference can be made between Chochmah*, Binah*, and Da'at*, and one can speak of the force of each of these attributes.

2. A force is also a potential. Potential is distinguished from its concrete application by its global and hidden character, or by what it can accomplish. One then speaks of force, and when this is no longer hidden but appears evidently and enters into detail, it becomes effective.

At this last level there is indeed a difference between Chochmah* and Binah*, which is why they are called 'father and mother,' as various texts establish, including in the Tanya*.

D) You ask what is the difference between Tiferet*, harmony, and Hod*, splendor, these two Attributes both being linked to beauty. Moreover, what connection is there between the beauty of Hod* and 'the viscera that give counsel'?

In most Chassidic discourses defining Hod* that I have been able to see, this Attribute is linked to submission more than to splendor, the latter notion being introduced only a few times, in particular in the Tanya*, which cites both explanations.

One can deduce from this what the difference is between Tiferet* on the one hand — beauty that is perceptible intellectually and results from the harmony of colors and emotions — and Hod* on the other hand — beauty that is perceived as such without truly being definable, because it transcends understanding.

For the moment I have not seen Hod* presented as harmony and beauty. Indeed, there can only be true beauty in the presence of harmonious colors, as the Tanya* and the Bad Kodesh* explain.

In fact it is fitting that a particularly profound concept reveal itself to the one who perceives it, for even if the latter does not understand it perfectly, he can nonetheless measure the depth of the one who transmits it, since full comprehension of the concept is not determinative for reaching it.

Nevertheless the depth of the concept only permits revealing its most superficial dimension. Beauty then consists in making it accessible even to the one with the most limited perception. It is then that 'the viscera give counsel,' even when the effective comprehension of Tiferet* is lacking.

Sometimes the person who receives a concept is so distant from it that it does not even awaken submission within him. He then has only the awareness that he should submit. This level is called 'Hod of Hod*.' A parable will help understand it:

A villager does not know who the king is. When he sees, however, that the chief of his village — whose greatness he knows — prostrates himself before the prince, he decides to submit to this prince who, through that act, becomes a wonderful personage in his eyes. Then, when he sees this prince prostrate himself in turn before the king, the villager becomes aware that he must submit to him. That is Hod of Hod*.

You will consult the Chassidic discourses of Lag BaOmer*, in particular in the Siddur*, which also define Hod of Hod* and upon which the explanation just developed is based. The Tzemach Tzedek's* commentary on Tehillim* also states: 'The quintessence of Chochmah* enables one to understand an intellectual notion without however revealing it. Then Hod* enables one to transmit it to one's fellow. Conversely, Hod* is occluded when one does not teach, like a sun that would not shine. In this sense Hod* evokes not only submission, though it incorporates that as well. For it designates above all the reflection that illumines.' This is what he says regarding our subject, and all of this could be developed further.

Wishing you all good,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

One may therefore introduce two distinctions:

1. Does one perceive or not the beauty of an intellectual concept?

2. The beauty of Tiferet* is intrinsic, and this point seems to me determinative.

Hod* implies a relationship that remains external. The one who gives transmits a particularly profound idea that surpasses the one who receives it. Its beauty is therefore linked to its own value, but it is not perceived as such by everyone.

(2) Which is the origin of his existence.

(3) Being originally a cell of the father's brain, the seminal drop becomes, after conception, a cell of the child's brain.

(4) For his father, their two existences being different.

(5) Which is inseparable from the body.
