I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of Friday, in which you tell me that you have been, until now, a student of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of Lod, but it seems to you that, for various reasons, you cannot continue your studies in this institution. And it appears that the essential reason is the necessity of assisting your parents in order to ensure the family's sustenance.

If you consult with the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*, you can surely arrange to continue your studies for the major part of the day while also earning a livelihood. You have had the merit of being in the tent of Torah* for several years already. You have studied the revealed dimension of the Torah and Chassidus*, its inner dimension — the soul of the Torah. Everything must therefore be done to continue on this path, at least for some time more.

Hashem ensures the sustenance of each person, and it is certain that if you continue your Torah* study, the material sustenance of your parents will in no way be compromised, which Hashem should protect us from. Moreover, commenting on the verse "If you walk in My statutes," the Sifra — reproduced in Rashi's* commentary at this same reference — says: "By exerting your efforts in Torah." Effort and toil are therefore necessary. It is thus that "I will give your rains."

You ask me whether your parents and relatives should settle in a place where material life is easier but where the Mitzvos* are not observed. The answer to this question is found in the Mishneh Torah of the great master, the Rambam*, Laws of Temperaments, beginning of Chapter 6. It states there that a person must bind himself to the righteous and always stand near the wise, in order to emulate their conduct and distance himself from evil. And, he continues, if he does not have the means to do so, he should remain alone. You should consult this text.

במענה על מכתבו מיום ו' אשר כותב שעד עתה למד בישיבת תומכי תמימים דלוד, ונדמה לו אשר מאיזה סיבות אינו יכול להמשיך בלימוד בהישיבה, ואחת הסיבות והעיקרית כנראה הוא מפני שצריך לעזור להוריו שלו בפרנסתם. ובודאי כשיתייעץ עם הנהלת ישיבת תומכי תמימים יוכל לסדר ענינו באופן שימשיך בלימודו בישיבה חלק חשוב מהיום וביחד עם זה יהי' לו ג"כ ענין של פרנסה... וכיון שזכה להיות באהלה של תורה זה כמה שנים ולמד תורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות פנימיות התורה נשמתא דאורייתא יש להשתדל ככל האפשרי להמשיך בזה לכל הפחות עוד משך זמן, ובטוח השי"ת הזן ומפרנס לכל שעל ידי זה שימשיך בלימוד התורה לא יחסר ח"ו בפרנסת הוריו שיחיו, ואדרבה הרי אם בחקותי תלכו ופירשו בספרא ומועתק ברש"י במקומו שתהיו עמלים בתורה, דוקא בעמל ויגיעה, אזי ונתתי גשמיכם וגו'.

בשאלתו אם יעתיקו הוריו וקרוביו למקום בו הענינים הגשמיים נוחים יותר אבל אינם דתיים. כבר דינו אמור במשנה תורה להמורה הגדול הוא הרמב"ם (הלכות דיעות ריש פרק ו') צריך אדם להתחבר לצדיקים ולישב אצל החכמים תמיד כדי שילמוד ממעשיהם ויתרחק מן כו' (ואם) שאינו יכול כו' ישב לבדו יחידי כו' יצא כו' עיי"ש.
