I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letter of 12 Shevat, in which you describe, in general terms, the situation of your family. You have difficulty earning your livelihood and you must also ensure the needs of the other family members. You therefore ask me whether the gates of Heaven are closed, which Hashem should protect us from, and for what reason those who accomplish nothing experience success.

It is unnecessary to point out that such a question — regarding the success not only of those who accomplish nothing but also of the wicked — has already been posed (see Letter #3085) by Moshe our master, as reported in Tractate Berachos* 7a. Several millennia have elapsed since then, and the children of Israel continue to advance on the path of Torah* and Mitzvos*. It is precisely in this way that our people endures, as it is said: "You are attached to Hashem your Elokim," and by virtue of this, "all are alive today."

The same applies to each and every one of us. When one is confronted with a difficulty — particularly in earning a livelihood — one must not think that it is so because one observes the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, which Hashem should protect us from. On the contrary, one must then strengthen one's trust in Hashem, Who provides for the needs of each person with kindness and mercy (as stated at the beginning of Birkas HaMazon*). It is thus that one causes these difficulties to disappear, and ultimately the situation improves.

One of the means of achieving such a result is also to increase Torah* and Mitzvos*, as it is said (at the beginning of Parshas* Bechukosai): "If you walk in My statutes and observe My commandments, I will give you..."

You are surely aware of the practice instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, of reciting Tehillim* each day after the morning prayer, according to the monthly division. You should adopt this practice, at least from now on, and may Hashem grant that this hasten the improvement of your condition.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ב שבט. בו כותב אודות המצב הכלכלי במשפחתם אשר פרנסתו עולה לו בקשוי, ובפרט שעליו לפרנס גם שאר בני המשפחה, ובמילא שואל האם ננעלו שערי שמים ח"ו ומדוע דרך ריקים צלחה.

והנה למותר להאריך אשר השאלה, לא רק מדוע דרך ריקים צלחה אלא אפילו דרך רשעים, כבר נשאלה ע"י משה רבנו (ברכות ז' ע"א) ועברו מאז כמה אלפים שנה ובני ישראל הולכים בדרך התורה והמצוה ודוקא על ידי זה קיימת אומתנו, וכמ"ש ואתם הדבקים בה' אלקיכם (הרי דוקא עי"ז ורק עי"ז) חיים כולכם היום. והוא הדין בהנוגע לכל אחד ואחת מאתנו, ובאם יש ענינים שבאים בקושי ובפרט בעניני פרנסה, הרי אין זה ח"ו מפני ששומרים התורה והמצוה, אלא אדרבה, ועל ידי התחזקות בבטחון בהשי"ת הזן ומפרנס לכל בחסד וברחמים ממעטים הקישוים בזה, וסוף סוף משתפר גם המצב של הפרנסה, והסגולה לזה הוא גם כן להרבות בתורה ובמצוה וכמ"ש אם בחקותי תלכו ואת מצותי תשמרו כו' ונתתי וגו'.

בטח ידוע לו מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע לאמר בכל יום אחר תפלת שחרית שיעור תהלים - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - וישמור עלי' עכ"פ מכאן ולהבא, ויה"ר שגם זה ימהר הטבת מצבו.
