Igrot Kodesh · Letter 330 — Kindling Others — Torch Metaphor for Outreach and Inner Light

By the grace of Hashem,

26 Shevat 5708,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, student of the Yeshiva*,

Rav Y. Hitrik(1),

I greet and bless you,

I have duly received your letters and enclosed you will find a detailed note indicating the conditions and modalities of distribution. In this way you will undoubtedly know success, as in all areas of activity of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita.

I wrote to you(2) that one must 'imbibe' one's neighbor with the teaching of Torah*, and regarding this you conclude your letter with the words: 'What is one to do if he locks himself in his room? How does one draw him out of his isolation?' Citing his father, my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita, wrote in this regard: 'When one raises a torch, objects gather to the light, for brightness attracts.'

Why speak here of objects? Because the term that designates them, Chafetz*, also alludes to deep will, as distinct from Ratzon*(3). Now, the deep will of every Jew is to bind himself to Hashem and to His Torah*, Torah of Light (...)

You say that oil may not illuminate the person himself when it is murky. But murky oil also permeates everything. Moreover it gives light, even if its brightness is not very luminous. Even so, it is truly light and not darkness. In such a case there is indeed a light that is lit, as the Talmud*, the decisors, and actual practice demonstrate.

In general, what is the purpose of melancholy if it is of no use for Torah*, the service of Hashem, and good deeds? Moreover, if it distances one from them, it is a forbidden emotion.

Each person, in the place where he finds himself, is the emissary of divine Providence. If he fulfills his mission and acts concretely, he is certain to know success and good, spiritual and material.

מכתביו נתקבלו ומוסג"פ מכתב מפורט ע"ד תנאי ואופני ההפצה ובודאי, כשאר עניני כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א, יהי' ג"ז בהצלחה.

ומה שמסיים במכתבו (לענין מה שכתבתי לפעפע בחבירו) "ומה לעשות אם הוא סגור בחדרו איך להוציאו ממשכא דקמצא" - הנה כבר כתב כ"ק מו"ח אד"ש במכתביו (בשם אדנ"ע): כשמעמידים פנס מתקבצים החפצים באור - ליכטיקייט - ציט צו עכ"ל.

וי"ל הדיוק החפצים באור אשר חפץ מורה על פנימיות הרצון משא"כ רוצה (ראה לקו"ת פ' שלח סד"ה טובה הארץ) ופנימיות רצון כל בנ"י שלם הוא את ד' ותורתו תורה אור , וכידוע הראי' מהא דגט מעושה כשר ועפמ"ש ברמב"ם הל' גירושין ספ"ב.

ומה שכתב עוד שאולי אין השמן מאיר גם בעצמו כי עכור הוא, - הנה גם שמן עכור מפעפע וגם מאיר אלא שאין האור בהיר כ"כ, אבל מכלל חשך פשיטא שיצא, וגם הדלקת הנר מקרי, וכמו דמוכח בש"ס פוסקים ובמוחש, ובכלל מה בצע במ"ש אם אינה מביאה תועלת בתורה עבודה או גמ"ח, ואם היא מונעת מהם ה"ז דבר האסור.

וכל אחד במקומו הוא שליח ההשגחה העליונה ואם רק יתחיל בעשי' למלאות שליחותו בטח יצליח. וגם טוב לו ג"כ הן ברוחניות והן בגשמיות.
