Igrot Kodesh · Letter 328 — Tanya on Words and Thought — Divine Unity Before Creation

Volume 2 · Letter 162

By the grace of Hashem,

16 Shevat 5708,

To the distinguished great Rav, learned Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav A. E. Axelrod(1),

I greet and bless you,

I am responding to your letter.

Chapter 20 of the Tanya* states that words originate at the beginning of thought, when a person wonders how to fulfill his desire. The same statement appears in chapter 132 of Boneh Yerushalayim*.

You point out that the revelation emanating from the mind and its comprehension must also necessarily express themselves in the form of words(2). It follows that words exist well before thought.

In reality, however, the Tanya explains in these chapters that the creation of the world did not in any way call Hashem's unity into question. In general there are two categories of worlds — the concealed world and the revealed world — as various texts explain, and above all chapter 11 of Sha'ar HaYichud VehaEmunah*.

The Tanya thus underscores that in the celestial spheres the words constituting thoughts and speech remain, after having been formed, in total union with their source, preceding their existence.

Indeed, worlds, before taking form, are truly an integral part of their first source, in which Hashem fixed, potentially, what each one would be. At that stage they do not yet have effective existence, and one can deduce from this what these words are. At a level transcending thought(3) they do not really exist. Only pure intellect or pure emotion are then perceived, but not words. One who meditates on a concept will feel love without expressing it in words, as Likkutei Torah* and Biyurei HaZohar* explain.

One can therefore describe this process as follows. By binding oneself intellectually to divine perception, for example, one arouses within oneself a desire to know. Then the force of the intellect draws from the potential of comprehension in order to enable an effective perception. Afterwards one attaches deeply to the concept, which deepens its comprehension.

One thereby gives birth to love and fear of Hashem. And one wonders how to quench the thirst one feels for Him, by putting Torah* and Mitzvot* into practice through one's thoughts, words, and actions. At that point the emergence of words becomes a necessity, as the Chassidic discourses state.

Obviously one can bypass certain stages of the process just described. Thus the Siddur* of the Ari Zal* says of one who suddenly bursts into tears during the Ten Days of Teshuvah* that he is judged at that very instant, even though through the revealed forces of his personality he cannot in any way be aware of it. He may thus be led to recite Tehillim* or be seized by a desire for Teshuvah*, to confess his sins. For that purpose he will use words that will be the revealers of his soul's essence, without intermediary.

Nevertheless such a situation remains exceptional. Moreover, one can even consider that in such a case all the stages are indeed traversed, some remaining however concealed. Thus chapter 8 of Sha'ar HaYichud VehaEmunah states that 'an emotion is systematically present in every thought.'

This does not at all contradict the fact that during Rosh Chodesh* the attribute of Malchut* receives directly from the forces of the intellect without passing through those of emotion. One may compare it to words serving to convey an idea. Indeed, even in such a case one must feel love for intellectual activity or the fear of misinterpreting the subject of one's study(4). You will consult in this regard the Or HaTorah* and the Siddur*, which define the 'emotions of the intellect,' which are the source of the words of thought.

Wishing you all good,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

(1) Rav Avraham Eliyahu Axelrod. See letter 225.

(2) How then can one say that these arise in the heart if they already exist beforehand?

(3) Transcending words.

(4) There is therefore indeed a passage through the attributes of emotion, though in a different form.
