9 Shevat* 5715,
Brooklyn,
To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav* David Meir (see note 1),
Greetings and blessings,
I was pleased to receive your letter of the 4th of Shevat*, in which you announce good news — the completion of the study of the Talmud*. As is the virtuous Jewish custom, you will surely begin its study again immediately. It is stated, indeed, that "the Torah* and the Holy One, blessed be He, are one." Consequently, the Torah* is itself infinite. Furthermore, its end is connected to its beginning and its beginning to its end.
One can understand this custom in light of the statement that "the Torah* of Hashem* is whole." The Baal Shem Tov* emphasizes that man cannot envision the commencement of this wholeness, that it is complete, as the Meor Einayim* states on Tractate Avos*, at the paragraph beginning "Exceedingly" — which you should consult. This is why after the conclusion, one begins again from the start.
Indeed, one who reaches the conclusion of the study understands even more clearly that he must begin again from the beginning. According to the well-known formula, "the summit of knowledge is to understand that we cannot comprehend You." You should consult, on this subject, the Shnei Luchos HaBris*, Tractate Shevuos, page 191b, which alludes to the Torah*. The more one accumulates study and knowledge, the more one "understands that one cannot comprehend You."
This is also one of the allusions found at the end of the Talmud*: "It was taught in the house of study of Eliyahu* that one who studies Halachos* (every day is assured of having a portion in the World to Come)." The subject here is specifically Halachos*, which are described as crowns. You should consult Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 29. Now, a crown surmounts the head, and the same applies to the Torah* — although it is stated, "Your Torah* is within my innards," that it enters deeply and merges with the flesh and blood, as chapter 5 of the Tanya* explains. Nevertheless, the Torah* is hidden from the eyes of all creatures and is a delight for Hashem* alone.
Nevertheless, Jewish souls are "portions of the Divine" which the Alter Rebbe* describes as "truly." They can therefore study the Torah* and make use of this potential, for the Children of Yisrael* reveal, first and foremost, the fact that their soul is indeed a part of Hashem*. For this purpose, they recite the Shema*: "Hear O Yisrael*, Hashem* is Elokeinu*" — our strength and our vitality.
The gift from your son-in-law and his wife, your daughter, has been transmitted to the fund of the 354 days (the Tzedakah* fund of the year; see letter no. 3073). May Hashem* grant you success, as well as your wife, so that you may derive from them and from all your children much true satisfaction — that is, Chassidic* satisfaction.
With my blessing,
(1) Rav* D. M. Shulman. See, on his subject, letter no. 2838.
