To Mr. Moshe Yaari,

Greetings and blessings,

I received with pleasure your letter of the 15th of Kislev*, together with your gift, the book Shluchei Eretz Yisrael* ("Emissaries of Eretz Yisrael*," authored by the recipient's brother, Avraham Yaari). This strengthens my hope that you do indeed retain the memory of the other subjects discussed in our conversation. Indeed, it is impossible that warm words should not eventually produce their effect — somewhat less or, preferably, somewhat more.

May my reward therefore be the following, in addition to the benefit that will accrue to the many. Hashem* has granted you the merit of exerting an influence upon which the fate of many people depends to a large extent, materially or spiritually, indirectly or directly.

I observe a good beginning in this regard. A letter I received these days from our Yeshivah* in Lod* describes your visit to that place, which was generous. Everything that lives develops, and I therefore have good hope that this sentiment will intensify and strengthen, for the good of all.

You say nothing of your state of health, and I would like to hope that all is well.

May Hashem* cause each of us not to be disturbed by the events of the body, so as to devote himself to the mission and role entrusted to the soul.

When you were here, you conveyed to me the greetings of Mrs. Simonov. Please therefore convey my greetings to her in return. I thank you in advance.

Obviously, upon receiving this book, I consulted the chapter that deals with the Aliyah* of the Chassidim* (under the leadership of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Horodok*, who succeeded the Maggid of Mezeritch* and entrusted Russia to the Alter Rebbe* when he went to the Holy Land*), and in particular those who were friends of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya*. It is regrettable that your brother was influenced by the writings of those who attacked the Alter Rebbe* on account of his disagreement with the Rav* of Kalisk*. Certainly, the book cites the content of the Alter Rebbe*'s letter, but one retains the impression that it vindicates his detractors.

Now, logic allows one to refute what was charged against the Alter Rebbe* in this matter. Moreover, there exists another letter from a neutral third party, Rav* Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev*. This letter, which is printed in various works, fully vindicates the Alter Rebbe*. Yet, for the time being, I have not seen it mentioned in your brother's book.

On this subject, it is stated in this book that Rav* Menachem Mendel of Horodok* departed this world on the second day of Rosh Chodesh* Sivan*. This assertion is even repeated twice. However, it is not correct. His passing occurred on the second day of Rosh Chodesh* Iyar*. And it is known that Rosh Chodesh* Sivan* invariably has only one day.

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מט"ו כסלו עם התשורה הספר "שלוחי ארץ ישראל". וזה מחזיק תקותי, אשר זוכר ג"כ תוכן שיחתנו בשאר הענינים. והרי אי אפשר לדברים היוצאים מן הלב שלא יפעלו פעולתם במעט או (יותר טוב) בהרבה, על כל פנים במשך הזמן. והי' זה שכרי, אשר נוסף על התועלת לרבים שתצא מזה, כיון שהצליחו השי"ת בהשפעה אשר גורל הרבים במדה חשובה תלוי בה, עוד ימצא גם סיפוק נפשי בהשפעת טובה גשמית או גם טובה רוחנית שגרם לה או גם נעשית על ידו.

ורואה אני התחלה טובה בזה, על פי המכתב שקבלתי ימים אלו מישיבתנו בלוד, מביקורו שם, שהי' ביקור בעין יפה. וככל דבר חי שסימן החיות הוא גידול והתפתחות, תקותי שגם זה הרגש יתגדל ויתפתח לתועלת הרבים.

כיון שאינו מזכיר דבר ע"ד בריאותו, רצוני לקוות שהיא בסדר.

ויהי רצון שכל אחד ואחד מאתנו לא יבלבלוהו מקרי הגוף מעבודת הנשמה ומלוי תפקידה.

כיון שבהיותו כאן מסר פ"ש ממרת סמונוב תחי', יואיל נא בטובו להיות גם כן שליח להולכה למסור לה פ"ש בשמי, ות"ח מראש.

מובן שבקבלת הספר עיינתי שם בפרק המדבר בתולדות עלית החסידים ובפרט עלית החסידים חברי רבינו הזקן בעל התניא. וחבל אשר אחיו שי' הושפע מכתבי בעלי-מחלוקת רבינו הזקן בהסכסוך עם הרב מקליסק, כי אף שמביא גם תוכן מכתב רבה"ז נשאר הרושם שמצדיק הוא את בעלי מחלקתו, למרות אשר, נוסף על זה שאין השכל מקבל ההאשמה על רבינו הזקן בענינים כאלו, הרי יש גם מכתב מצד שלישי ניטראלי והוא הרב ר' לוי יצחק מברדיטשוב שנתפרסם בכמה מקומות ושנותן הצדק כמילואו לרבינו הזקן, ולע"ע לא מצאתיו אפילו מוזכר בספר אחיו.

דרך אגב, כתוב שם אשר הסתלקות הרב ר' מנחם מענדל מהורודוק היתה ביום ב' דר"ח סיון, והוכפל זה במקום שני בספר. ואינו, כי נסתלק ביום ב' דר"ח אייר. וידוע אשר ר"ח סיון הוא תמיד יום אחד.
