Igrot Kodesh · Letter 323 — Maintaining Connection in Times of Crisis

Volume 2 · Letter 157

By the grace of Hashem,

Day of the Hillula* of

the Admur HaZaken*[1] 5708,

To the great Rav*, Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav E. Karasik[2],

I send you my greetings and blessings.

I received your letter, and you can well understand that during a period such as this[3], it would be proper for your correspondence to be more frequent and to carry news that you are well, as are your brother-in-law and the members of your family, so that we too may know this.

I am surprised that throughout this entire period, neither you nor your brother-in-law, Rav M. G.[4], informed us of your decision regarding the publication of our masters' books[5]. Perhaps the situation[3] brought this about — and no doubt the time has come for you to attend to it.

The books you ordered have been sent to you, and you will surely confirm receipt upon their arrival.

For the time being, the conclusion of the Torah*[6] has not yet been done.

Enclosed you will find a fascicle from my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita*, and you will no doubt make it available to as many people as possible.

I will conclude with a point of current relevance.

Our Sages say, in tractate Megillah 13a, that 'Tevet* is a month in which physical contact is pleasurable[7].' Now, it is known that Esther* represents all Jewish souls, and the Midrash* adds that Achashverosh* alludes to the Holy One, blessed be He.

An explanation may be offered based on what has just been said. Our Sages use the term 'body of the Torah*' to designate a great principle, a fundamental rule. The beginning of Likutei Torah* likewise presents this idea. One may conclude from this that the essence of Hashem 'appreciates the contact,' so to speak, of the body — that is, of the essence of the Jewish soul. And this contact is effected by the physical body, in the most literal sense.

One must therefore serve Hashem through one's body[8] and with one's body[9]. In the World to Come*, we will ourselves see how the soul draws its vitality from it.

In commenting on the verse 'when you see your enemy's donkey collapsing under its burden,' the Baal Shem Tov* revealed an explanation which is mentioned in the Hayom Yom* at page 23, and which likewise shows the necessity of 'appreciating the contact.'

The Admur HaZaken* exerted himself with all his strength to vivify every thing, as the Tzemach Tzedek's* answer, also cited in the Hayom Yom* for 24 Tevet[10], attests. He transformed in particular the 'dead' part of the body — the intellect, cold and phlegmatic by nature — so that it would perceive Divinity, as the Kuntres Torat HaChassidut*[11] states.

Moreover, commenting on the passage in tractate Megillah cited above, Rashi* says: 'because of the cold'[12].

Wishing you all good,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

(5) See, on this subject, letter no. 261.

(6) The Sefer Torah* written in order to go to meet our righteous Moshiach*. See, on this subject, letter no. 29.

(7) This enabled Esther* to be united with Achashverosh*, a union from which came the salvation of all Israel, achieved through her intervention.

(8) Through concrete actions.

(9) Without imposing mortifications upon oneself.

(10) The date of this letter.

(11) Of the Previous Rebbe*.

(12) It is for this reason that 'physical contact is pleasurable.' This statement is therefore also connected to the intellect, which is cold by nature.
