B"H

26 Teves* 5715,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Uriel (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to what you informed me about the letter you received and what was enclosed with it.

If it happens that the one who claims that a Rav* or even an ordinary Jew is an idolater, associating other forces with Hashem*, is a fool, it is clear that he is not responsible for his actions, according to the established principle in this matter. Such a man lacks discernment and is therefore exempt from fulfilling the Mitzvos*.

Conversely, one who deliberately repeats the words of this fool transgresses a prohibition. How much more so if it is a man of influence! And such a prohibition emanates from the Torah* and not merely from the Sages*! One must indeed possess proof whose validity the Torah* recognizes in order to permit oneself to affix such a label to a person. If this is not the case, our Sages* consider that such speech constitutes idolatrous practice, immoral conduct, and a crime. And if one sees someone repeating these words, one must know with whom one is dealing!

In general, a distinction must be made between biting expressions, anathemas, and curses relating to opinions, to the program of a party, or even to the party itself — as opposed to those directed at such or such a person.

I shall cite an example. The Rambam* rules, in his Laws of Teshuvah*, chapter 3, paragraph 7, that a man who claims that Hashem* possesses a body or has a form is a heretic. It is quite clear that the Rambam* would not have applied this term to someone who lived in his era or before it — Heaven forfend. On the contrary, he responded to their questions (those of the persons who could have been placed in this category), and this point will not be elaborated upon here.

And if this is so for a ruling of the Rambam*... (how much more must it be the case in ordinary language).

My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, told me that between two Jews, however opposed they may be to one another, one cannot use the term of separation.

At the end of your letter, you tell me that you are worried upon observing the path the Chabad* movement is taking.

I am able to reassure you. Hashem* exercises His Divine Providence* over every Jew, in accordance with the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*. He will therefore save the people of Chabad* from all dangers they might face. He will also protect them from slander. The Chassidic* movement has experience in this matter, since its constitution and its birth in the era of the Baal Shem Tov* and the Alter Rebbe*, down to our days.

(1) Rav* Uriel Tzimmer, of Yerushalayim*.
