To the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav* Raphael Nachman HaKohen (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the 15th of Teves*. I am surprised that you inform me of your discouragement, because you think you are not in good health. Indeed, you say that you suffer from the heart. Now, this situation is undoubtedly due, in large part, to the fact that you concentrate your thoughts on your condition. Added to this is the disorder that prevailed during the period of the Chassidic* farbrengens* of the month of Kislev*. Cease, therefore, thinking about it, adopt a regulated way of life regarding food, drink, and sleep, and you will see that all of this will pass.

As you request, I will mention your name (at the resting place of the Frierdiker Rebbe*) so that your state of health may improve. Indeed, to meditate deeply upon one's health has the effect of deteriorating it. According to the analogy we heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, a healthy man does not feel the limbs of his body, so obvious is it to him that they function as he desires. It is not the same when he feels the superiority of his head — he then becomes haughty and proud. Analogies belonging to the domain of holiness and what they are meant to illustrate are an integral part of the Torah*, and the same applies to what concerns you.

I will also mention the name of your son-in-law and the members of your family who reside in Kfar Chabad*. My father-in-law, the Rebbe*, protects the Kfar* and he invokes Divine mercy for all who reside there, so that they may obtain the satisfaction of their needs, spiritual and material. May Hashem* cause the receptacles destined to contain these blessings to be sufficiently wide.

You enclose with your letter the list of participants in the lottery (to travel to visit the Rebbe), and I am pleased. You specify in your letter that you are part of the committee of this lottery. You will therefore surely find the appropriate words to explain to the participants the significance of such a lottery, as explained in the Shulchan Aruch*, Choshen Mishpat*, chapter 207, paragraph 13.

Indeed, the winner receives an amount much larger than his contribution. One may therefore fear that, in his mind, he does not truly acquire it. Consequently, each participant must accept wholeheartedly to donate the amount of his contribution, with nothing remaining of it. So that there be no doubt on this matter, it would be good for the winner to act as an emissary of all the participants. For "the emissary of a person is like that person himself," and when he travels, it will be, in a certain sense, as if all of them were doing so.

Certainly, there may be among the participants someone who desires to make this trip for an incidental reason (and not specifically to visit the Rebbe). Nevertheless, it is certain that the majority genuinely desire to visit the resting place and to meet (the Rebbe). Certainly, there will be only one winner. But all the participants should prepare themselves as if they were undertaking this journey themselves.

Before visiting the resting place of the Tzaddik*, who is, moreover, a public figure and, above all, a leader of Yisrael*, one must prepare oneself in the five domains defined by the discourse on pilgrimage to the tomb of the Tzaddik* by the Mitteler Rebbe*. These five domains correspond to the Nefesh*, Ruach*, Neshamah*, Chayah*, and Yechidah* (the five levels of the soul) that every Jew possesses.

May all of this exert its effect and genuinely inspire one's thoughts, words, and actions, in conformity with the will of our leader, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us.

As you request, I will also mention at the holy resting place the matter of the consul and the response you gave him. May Hashem* guide you on the path He deems good — a good that is visible and tangible, both materially and spiritually.

במענה על מכתבו מט"ו טבת, הנה לפלא שכותב שנפל ברוחו מפני שלפי דעתו מצב בריאותו אינו כדבעי כי מרגיש איזו מיחוש בלב. ובטח חלק גדול הוא מפני שמעסיק כח מחשבתו בזה, נוסף על העדר הסדרים בימי התועדות דחדש כסלו. ובמילא כשיסיח מחשבתו ויתנהג בסדר מסודר באכילה ושתי' ושינה וכו' - גם זה יעבור.

כבקשתו אזכירו להטבת הבריאות (כי הרי גם העמקת כח המחשבה בבריאות - גם זהו גרעון בבריאות. וכידוע המשל ששמענו מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שאדם בריא לגמרי אינו מרגיש את אבריו, כי מילתא דפשיטותא הוא אצלו שעושה בהם כפי רצונו - משא"כ כשמתחיל להרגיש מעלת הראש וכו', שמזה מובן ענין הגאוה והישות. וככל המשלים והנמשלים דקדושה - הרי גם המשל תורה היא בענינו, וה"ה בנדון דידן). כן אזכיר את חתנו וב"ב שי' הדרים בכפר חב"ד, אשר כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר חופף על הכפר ומעורר ר"ר על כל יושבי' להמשיך להם המצטרך להם ברוחניות והמצטרך להם בגשמיות. והלואי שיהיו כלים, כלי הקבלה שלהם, רחבים כדי צרכם.

נהניתי ממה שמצרף במכתבו רשימת המשתתפים בההגרלה. וכיון שכפי מכתבו הוא מחברי ועד ההגרלה - הנה בטח ימצא האותיות המתאימות להסביר לכל המשתתפים, כי - לכאורה ע"פ שו"ע (חו"מ רז, סי"ג) ענין של הגרלה בכגון דא, היינו שהזוכה מרויח דבר ששוה סכום גדול בהרבה ממה ששילם בעד השתתפותו, יש בזה חשש דאסמכתא באופן דלא קניא. וע"כ צ"ל שבנדו"ד הנה כל המשתתפים הסכימו בלבב שלם להקנות את מעותיהם בלי כל שיור, וכדי שלא יהי' גם חשש דחשש - הרי טוב יהי' שזה הזוכה יתחשב כשלוחם של כל המשתתפים, אשר שלוחו של אדם כמותו, ובמילא בנסיעתו של הזוכה הרי, במדה ידועה, כאו"א מהם נוסע. והנה אף את"ל שבין אותם המשתתפים אפשר להיות גם כזה החפץ לנסוע מפני סיבה צדדית, עכ"פ בטוח הדבר שרובם כוונתם להיות על הציון הק', להתראות וכו', ובמילא למרות שזוכה רק אחד בהנסיעה, הנה על כל המשתתפים לעשות הכנות המתאימות כאילו הם היו הנוסעים.

והרי קודם הילוך על ציון של צדיק ובפרט איש כללי וביחוד נשיא ישראל, צריכה להיות ההכנה בכל החמשת ענינים הנזכרים במאמר ענין ההשתטחות לאדמו"ר האמצעי, ומתאימים לנר"ן ח"י של נפש כ"א מישראל. ויה"ר שכל הנ"ל יביא להזזה והתעוררות בפועל במחדו"מ מתאים לרצון נשיאינו כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

כבקשתו אזכירו על הציון הק' גם בהנוגע להשאלה והמענה ששלח להקונסול.

והשי"ת ינחהו בדרך הטובה לפניו, בטוב הנראה והנגלה, בגשמיות וברוחניות.
