To my close relative, the Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, who descends from an illustrious family and possesses generous ways, Rav* Yisrael Moshe (see note 1),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received the ten books (from the library of Rabbi Shmaryahu Noach of Bobruisk; see letters no. 2739 and 2777), for which I thank you wholeheartedly. Subsequently, I received three more manuscripts of Chassidus*, some of which must be returned to you. I have not had time to examine them properly, but it appears that most of them are texts of the Tzemach Tzedek*. Only one manuscript is a copy of the Pri Etz Chaim*, and another was apparently written by a Chassid*. Perhaps you know who it is, to what extent his writings are reliable, and whether he received these explanations or authored them himself.

What has recently been published has been sent to you under separate cover. It consists of the Torah Or*, to which an index has been added, the notes of the Tzemach Tzedek* on Eichah*, published a few years ago — several commentaries on the five Megillos* having been discovered in a manuscript that was sent here. You will confirm to me that you have received all of this.

I am preparing the edition of a manuscript of discourses of the Alter Rebbe*, most of which are very brief, although some of them already appear in the Likkutei Torah* and Torah Or*. Notes have been added to them. Study is inconceivable without a new insight, all the more so since there are, in these manuscripts, discourses that I have not seen anywhere else thus far.

On a manuscript whose discourses have been reproduced, there is an inscription in the hand of the Rebbe Maharash*, specifying that it is by Rav* Pinchas Reizes. However, it is not the original but a copy. I hope that this book will appear within a few weeks, and, without making a formal pledge, I will send it to you.

The Torah* also takes chronology into account (even though it is said that the events it recounts are not arranged in chronological order), and perhaps you possess manuscripts of the Alter Rebbe* of any kind — not only of Chassidus*, but letters or responsa pertaining to the revealed dimension of Torah*. Similarly, I have heard that in the Holy Land* — and apparently even in your possession — there is a manuscript containing several chapters of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe* (see the introduction of the Yagdil Torah*, New York, vol. 10, regarding the foreword of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, edition of 5745/1985). I do not know exactly whether it is another edition of this work or chapters that were not printed. I thank you in advance for providing these clarifications.

בתודה רבה לבבית אאשר בזה קבלת עשרה הביכלעך ואח"כ עוד שלשה כתבי דא"ח אשר הגיעו מהם ע"מ להחזיר ואף שעדיין לא הרשה הזמן לעיין בהם כדבעי, אבל כנראה שרובם ככולם הם דרושי אדמו"ר הצמח צדק (מלבד ביכל אחד שהוא העתק פע"ח וביכל אחד כנראה לאחד מהחסידים, ואפשר ידוע להם מי הוא ועד כמה הוא בר סמכא במה שכותב ומבאר מפי השמועה או מדעת עצמו).

בחבילה בפ"ע נשלח לו את מה שהו"ל בזמן האחרון והוא ס' תורה אור בהוספת מפתח וכו' וכן רשימות מגילת איכה של אדמו"ר הצ"צ שנדפס זה מאיזה שנים ובאחד הביכלך ששלחו לכאן שהוא כנראה חמש מגילות נמצאו כמה דרושים מהם, ובטח יאשר הקבלה.

מתעסק הנני בהו"ל של ביכל מאמרי רבנו הזקן רובם קצרים אף שחלק מהם נדפס בלקו"ת ותו"א ובתוספת הגהות, הרי אי אפשר לביהמ"ד בלא חידוש ובפרט שבביכלעך אלו עצמם נמצא ג"כ מאמרים שלע"ע לא מצאתים נדפסים במקום אחר. - על ביכעל אחד שממנו נעתקו המאמרים נרשם בכת"י אדמו"ר מוהר"ש שזהו ביכל כת"י הר"פ ז"ל (ר' פנחס רייזעס) (לא גוף כת"י אלא כת"י מעתיק) ותקותי אשר במשך איזה שבועות יו"ל ובל"נ יושלח להם...

כיון שגם בתורה ישנו מוקדם ומאוחר הרי מתאים להנ"ל אפשר ישנם תח"י מהביכלעך מאת רבנו הזקן איזה שיהי' ולא רק בחסידות אלא אפילו מכתבים ושו"ת גם בנגלה. - כן הגיעתני שמועה אשר נמצא באה"ק ת"ו - וכנראה הכוונה לכת"ר שי' בכת"י - סימנים משו"ע רבנו הזקן, והשמועה אי ברורה אם הכוונה למהדורא אחרת, או לסימנים שלא נדפסו ות"ח מראש על הכתיבה גם בזה.
