Igrot Kodesh · Letter 310 — Rambam on Bilaam and the Nature of Prophetic Miracles
Volume 2 · Letter 144
By the grace of Hashem,
22 Cheshvan 5708,
To the distinguished chassid, devoted to communal needs, Rav M. Ch.[1], the shochet*,
I greet and bless you,
I received your letter some time ago. Please do not hold against me my delay in replying, due to my many occupations.
The books you requested have been sent to you in two packages. Part of the chassidic talks and discourses will be covered by the Keren HaMatzot*[2]. Indeed, you write to me that you wish to make them available to as many people as possible. Please confirm that you have received these packages.
You ask me about the statement of the Guide for the Perplexed*, Part II, chapter 42, according to which the episode of Bilaam who, on his journey, conversed with his donkey belongs to the realm of prophecy. You wonder why one should depart so far from the plain meaning of the verse.
The Ralbag*, at the beginning of Parashat Balak*, gives the reason: 'One may raise strong questions about this account. How could the donkey have had a vision of an angel of Hashem? In fact, only a prophet can have such an apparition, as the end of the Book of Daniel states. The men who accompanied him did not see it. Why, at first, did Bilaam not see this angel, who was standing there bearing his sword and intending to tell him what he must do? Why was such a miracle — the one that gave speech to a donkey — necessary? And we know that Hashem does not perform unnecessary miracles. Yet our Sages interpret this account in its literal sense. That is why, they say, the mouth of the donkey was created at twilight[3].' He then cites the explanation of the Guide for the Perplexed.
Tractate Avot* indicates that this account is to be interpreted literally. And one can therefore respond to these questions as follows:
A) How could the donkey see the angel, which is possible only for a prophet, as the Book of Daniel states?
The Ramban*, commenting on the verse Bereishit* 18:2, which the Abravanel* cites in his commentary on the Guide for the Perplexed, states that it is not necessary to be a prophet to have a vision of an angel. Or perhaps one should say, as the Ramban advances in his commentary on the verse Bereishit 22:33, that the donkey sensed the presence of the angel or saw him without understanding what he was. It therefore turned aside out of fear of the sword, as any animal would have done.
Bilaam did not perceive any of this, did not catch sight of the sword. Indeed, it is said that demons hide from the eyes of men, because men, being endowed with discernment, might be disturbed upon seeing them, which would pose a danger to them. Nothing of the sort is true for animals.
Tractate Berakhot* 6a states that if the eye had been granted permission to see, no one could have endured that vision. And the interpretation that Rav Katzen gives to this statement does not correspond to its plain meaning.
You should also consult the Midrash Talpiyot* which, under the entry 'the donkey of Bilaam,' develops another explanation.
B) Why did Bilaam not initially see the angel who was there to tell him what he must do?
This question can be set aside based on what the Zohar* Balak, page 206b, states, namely that Bilaam's perception passed through his donkey. Through his acts, he desired and was able to curse Israel. It was therefore necessary, first of all, to annihilate his sorcery and his evil power.
Our Sages also say, in Tractate Berakhot 7a, that had Hashem grown angry during that period, Bilaam could have carried out his plans. Thus it is clear that the vision of the angel alone was not sufficient.
C) What was the purpose of this miracle of causing a donkey to speak?
Based on what has just been said, Bilaam wished to curse Israel through his donkey. A miracle therefore occurred within a miracle, and it was precisely through that donkey that his design was foiled (...). The Yalkut Shimoni* says in this regard: 'The princes of Moav were astonished, witnessing a miracle the like of which they had not seen in the world.'
The Zohar, Part III, page 209b, states: 'Through the words of the donkey, he was dishonored, understood that he had lost his power. One may conclude from this that animals do not fall under the sway of the forces of evil' (...).
Wishing you all the best,
Rav Menachem Schneerson,
Of course, I remain ready to respond to your questions in the future, to the best of my ability. But please do not hold it against me if, owing to my many activities, I reply with a delay.
