Igrot Kodesh · Letter 304 — Obligation to Visit the Rebbe for Festivals and Spiritual Pilgrimage

Volume 2 · Letter 138

By the grace of Hashem,

24 Tishri* 5708,

To the Chassid*, Hashem-fearing,

Rav M. HaCohen[1],

I greet and bless you,

I had expected that you would come here, as every year, for Shemini Atzeret* and Simchat Torah*, so that we could meet and converse. It seems that, for various reasons, this was not possible and the journey could not be made.

This is most regrettable. Our Sages say, in tractate Rosh Hashana* 16b, that one is obligated to go to one's teacher for the festivals, as the Kessef Mishneh* states in his commentary on the Mishneh Torah*, Laws of Torah Study 5:7.

Nowadays, this principle is applied less scrupulously, and various reasons have been given for this. Another reason may also be cited. We are accustomed to say[2]: 'We can no longer ascend, appear, and prostrate ourselves before You.' Now, while it is true that we cannot ascend and appear, because 'a hand has destroyed Your Sanctuary'[2], it remains possible to prostrate oneself before Hashem in any place, and not only in the Temple*.

One may therefore conclude that there are two manners of prostration:

1. One may do so superficially, with one's body or, at best, through one's concrete action, which is also physical — namely, not rebelling against the King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He.

2. One may also do so deeply, by making one's own will disappear before the will of Hashem, by wanting nothing other than what He wills. Such an attitude is moral, and it was attained, in former times, by making pilgrimage to the Temple*.

Since its destruction, when it is impossible for us to prostrate ourselves[3] before Hashem, a reflection of the Temple* can be perceived in the synagogue and the house of study, that is, during prayer, as the Likkutei Torah* explains.

In practice, one can verify that it is indeed difficult to submit one's will, one's intellect, and the powers of one's soul to Hashem when one is not helped toward this. Each person is convinced of his own worth and therefore does not feel the need to annul his own will. The solution is therefore the following. One must ask for help from one who possesses elevation and who is perfectly objective in this matter. One may thus entrust oneself to his counsel in serving Hashem. Now, the opportune moment for doing so is the time of the three festivals[4], as was the case when we possessed the Temple*. There is no need to elaborate on all of this.

May Hashem grant that you be able to complement this with the letters of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, at least with regard to what can be written, until we meet again.

I close wishing you all the best,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,
Director of the Executive Committee[5],
