Igrot Kodesh · Letter 302 — Selichot and Tashlich Customs During the Ten Days of Teshuvah

Volume 2 · Letter 136

By the grace of Hashem,

First day of Chol HaMoed*

Sukkot* 5708,

To the pleasant Chassid*, Hashem-fearing,

student of the Yeshiva*, Rav C., the Shochet*,

I greet and bless you,

You have asked me about the recitation of Selichot* during the Ten Days of Teshuvah*. I therefore reproduce here my personal notes, taken in Tishri* 5691[1], in Riga, and in Tishri* 5708[2], in Brooklyn:

Tishri* 5691: Customs: After Rosh Hashana*, Selichot* are no longer recited. Comments given at Rosh Hashana*: The Rebbe* of Ruzhin did not go to Tashlich* on Rosh Hashana*, but went on the day of the Thirteen Attributes of Divine Mercy*, which is the fourth day of Teshuvah*[3]. When I[4] was in the United States last year, in New York, I went to Tashlich* a few days before Rosh Hashana*, at the conclusion of Rosh Hashana*, and on the day of the Thirteen Attributes of Divine Mercy*. The Tzemach Tzedek* recited the Thirteen Attributes of Divine Mercy*[5]. The Rabbanit*, wife of the Rebbe* Maharash*, did likewise, and a Minyan* was formed for her. The Rebbe*[6] did not participate in this Minyan*. Did he recite them alone at home? This was not stated clearly, but 'between the lines' one could understand that he no longer recited Selichot* after Rosh Hashana*, not even alone at home.

Comments given in Tishri* 5708: The wife of the Rebbe* Maharash*, his mother-in-law, the wife of the Tzemach Tzedek*, and likewise the wife of the Admor* HaEmtza'i* recited Selichot* during the Ten Days of Teshuvah*. But the men did not. My grandfather, the Rebbe* Maharash*, related to my father that once he saw his mother going to Selichot* during the Ten Days of Teshuvah*, while his father, the Tzemach Tzedek*, was studying Torah*. He questioned him about this, and the Tzemach Tzedek* answered him: 'There is a time to speak[7] and another time to act.'

I noted that, according to what is written, Selichot* are recited for Tzom Gedalya*. My father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, answered me: 'Tzom Gedalya* is one of the four fasts[8].'

Please convey my greetings to all your family,

Rav Menachem Schneerson,

So as not to transgress the sanctity of the festival, this letter is unsigned.
