Igrot Kodesh · Letter 299 — Yom Kippur Blessings, Kapparot, and Advocacy for Prisoners

By the grace of Hashem, Eve of Yom Kippur 5708.

To the learned Chassid, who fears Hashem, Rav B. T.[1], I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter and, in accordance with your request, I sent you a package of books to the address of Rav Binyaminson.[2]

I mentioned[3] today the prisoners.[4] Each year, on the eve of Rosh Hashana, we transmit here[3] a collective blessing request,[5] in the names of all the Chassidim and the students of the Yeshiva* who are on the other continent.

I will conclude with a timely point. This morning, when the shochet* came to my father-in-law the Rebbe Chlita to offer to cover the blood,[6] my father-in-law said to him: 'My father said (apparently when he himself was performing the mitzvah* of covering the blood, on the eve of Yom Kippur*): This[7] is representative of the divine service of Yom Kippur eve. If it is necessary to come into contact with severity,[8] one must cover it with kindness,[9] with earth which alludes to submission,[10] saying 'that my soul be like earth for all.' In this way one can feel deeply the atonement of sin that this day brings.'
