Igrot Kodesh · Letter 298 — Rambam, Kabbalah, and the Rosh Hashana Calendar Prohibition
Volume 2 · Letter 132
By the grace of Hashem, Seventh of the ten days of Teshuvah* 5708, To the great Rav, Chassid* of many accomplishments, Rav E.E. HaCohen[1], I greet and bless you,
In this period, I express to you my wishes that you be definitively inscribed, together with all the members of your family, for a good year.
I will also raise a subject connected to this period[2]. The Rambam* writes: 'Why can the first day of Tishrei never be a Sunday, a Wednesday, or a Friday? Because it can be fixed on certain days and must be postponed on others.' He does not explain the 'defect' of Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, preventing them from being Rosh Hashana,* and the 'quality' of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Shabbat,* which can be so. The Raavad* himself raises a question in this regard.
The explanation is as follows. The first day of Rosh Hashana, which is also that of the month of Tishrei,* reveals strict judgment. It therefore cannot be fixed on Sunday, which corresponds to the Attribute of Kindness,* nor on Wednesday, which is linked to the Attribute of Victory,* linked to Kindness. Furthermore, there cannot be two consecutive days that are postponed. The third could therefore only be Friday.
But it seems more accurate to say that Friday, linked to the Attribute of Foundation,* must be excluded because this attribute has the effect of softening severity. Thus, our Sages say, in tractate Pesachim 54a: 'Why was the word tov* not said on the second day of creation? Because then, the light of Gehinnom* was created. Then, this term was reintroduced on the sixth day[3].'
This will allow us to answer another question. The Rambam doubtless had a good reason for postponing precisely Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, as the Raavad asks. If so, why does he not specify this reason?
In fact, one can understand him if one considers that it is the reason just stated. The Sefer HaSichot 5700[4], at page 41, specifies, citing the Baal Shem Tov,* that the Rambam was versed in Kabbalah.* You will also consult the note I wrote in this regard. Nevertheless, the Rambam refrained from any reference, even by allusion, to Kabbalah, for it was dangerous to reveal it in his time[5].
With my blessing to be definitively inscribed for a good year, Rav Menachem Schneerson, Director of the executive committee[6],
