Igrot Kodesh · Letter 279 — Printing Instructions for Chabad Sefarim in Europe

By the grace of Hashem, 7 Menachem* Av* 5707, To our very dear friend, erudite and pleasant Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav D. Brawman[1], I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter of 15 Tammuz*. Indeed, I was surprised and troubled by your silence until now.
A) Upon receipt of your letter, I transmitted its contents to my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, who was satisfied to learn that the printing work was progressing. You will make every effort to carry it out in the most aesthetically pleasing manner possible.
B) In the preface of the Tanya*, the Ateret Rosh* and the Sha'arei Orah*, of which I am the signatory, the date must be corrected and written as: 20 Menachem Av 5707[2].
C) I have asked Rav B. G.[3] to advance you the funds for this printing, up to five hundred Marks per month, under my responsibility. Should the need arise, you will therefore address yourself directly to him and he will immediately make the funds available to you. You yourself will make every effort to reduce expenses, to the extent possible, provided that the aesthetic quality of the books does not suffer thereby, and do the best you can.
D) It is not necessary to print, in the Shulchan Aruch*, the addenda of the Tzemach Tzedek* found at the end of this book. These are not directly connected to the Shulchan Aruch and contain many errors. In the new edition of the Tzemach Tzedek, they have been corrected and elaborated.
I will send you shortly the title page and the preface. You will then be able to begin printing the Shulchan Aruch. You will produce only one thousand copies.
E) According to the plan, in addition to the Tanya, Ateret Rosh, Sha'arei Orah, the Shulchan Aruch, the first, second and fourth volumes of Sifraynu*, one thousand copies of the Sha'ar HaEmunah* and Sha'ar HaYichud* of the Admor HaEmtzai*, and two thousand copies of the complete Siddur* Tehillat Hashem*, correcting the errors to the extent possible according to the list that was sent to you, must also be printed. When we receive here the first completed books, we will decide, based on the printing and binding, on the subsequent steps.
F) Could you return the Biyurei HaZohar* to Shalom DovBer Schneerson?
G) I am awaiting your news regarding the other prices, as you promised me in your letter. But above all, keep me informed of the progress of the printing. You will send here a booklet of twenty or thirty pages, each time one is printed, so that we may evaluate the result.
H) You will make every effort to have the Tanya arrive here before Rosh Hashana* and travelers will be able to bring it, if possible even before the gathering organized for 18 Elul*. If you notify me sufficiently in advance, we will print here the booklet that accompanies the Tanya[4], so that it is ready in time. Ateret Rosh and Sha'arei Orah will be ready for the same date and, in any case, no later than the month of Cheshvan*.
I) If the books are brought here by travelers, you will entrust them with three quarters of what is printed.
J) I do not know how to contact you as quickly as possible and I am therefore writing to you directly and also through our friend in Paris[5]. Please inform me how to do so in the future.
I will conclude by citing the words of our master[6].
My father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, writes in a letter: 'The Tzemach Tzedek explains that a spoken word reaches the widest audience, a written word addresses the entire world, and a printed word is preserved for all generations.'
When one speaks of all generations, one designates at least four. According to the Tzemach Tzedek, in his commentary on Tehillim*, this expression designates the entire chain of worlds, and these four generations are therefore the four worlds, Atzilut*, Beriah*, Yetzirah*, Asiyah*.
Just as these worlds constitute the totality of generations, four generations are representative of the totality thereof. The same explanation is found elaborated in the Likkutei Torah*.

מכתבו מט"ו תמוז הגיעני, וכבר תמהתי ודאגתי על שתיקתו ע"ע.

א) תיכף לקבלת מכתבו מסרתי תוכנו לכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א והי' שבע רצון על אשר ענין ההדפסה הולך ומתקדם. ובטח ישתדל אשר יהי' בהידור האפשרי.

ב) בהקדמה שהנני בא עלי' על החתום (בתניא, עט"ר וש"א) צריך לשנות הזמן.

וצ"ל: כ' מנחם אב ה'תש"ז.

ג) להרב"ג הודעתי שאם ידרוש ממנו יתן לו על הדפסה עד ת"ק תרמכן לחדש ועל אחריותי, ולכן בעת הצורך יפנה ישר אליו ובודאי ימלא תיכף בקשתו. ובלי ספק שכת"ר ימעט בהוצאה כפי האפשרי (באם לא יזיק ליופי הספרים) כי באמונה הם עושים.

ד) בהשו"ע אין צריך להדפיס הוספות הצ " צ שבסוף (כי אין שייכים להשו"ע, יש בהם הרבה טעיות, ובהוצאה החדשה של הצ"צ נדפסו מתוקנים ובהוספה). השער וההקדמה אשלח בקרוב, ויכול להתחיל בהדפסת השו"ע. צ"ל רק אלף עקזעמפ'.

ה) לפי התכנית לע"ע ידפיס נוסף על התניא, עט"ר, ש"א, שו"ע, ספרנו ח"א, חלק ב, ח"ד, גם שער האמונה ושער היחוד לאדהאמ"צ - אלף עקז', וסדור תהלת השם השלם (ולתקן בו ע"פ לוח התקון שנשלח לו, ככל האפשרי) שני אלפים עקזעמפל'. ולכשיתקבלו לכאן עקז' הראשונים ונראה פה אופן ההדפסה והכריכה - נחליט על העתיד.

ואו) בבקשה להחזיר את ביאורי הזהר לשלום דובער שניאורסאן.

ז) אחכה להודעתו ע"ד שאר המחירים וכמו שמבטיח במכ' הנ"ל והעיקר להודיע על דבר מהלך ההדפסה. ולשלוח קונטרס אחד (לדוגמא, להראות פה) מכל עשרים או שלשים דפים הנדפסים.

ח) בטח ישתדל ככל האפשרי שהתניא יוכל להגיע לכאן קודם ר"ה (ובודאי יהיו נוסעים מהתם להכא) ומה טוב קודם חגיגת ח"י אלול (אם יודיע בעוד מועד - ידפיסו פה בעתה החוברת השייכת להתניא). עט"ר וש"א ג"כ לזמן הנ"ל ועכ"פ לא יאוחר מחדש חשון.

ט) באם ישלחו לכאן הספרים ע"י נוסעים - אזי יושלח לכאן שלשה רבעים מכל הנדפס.

יוד) איני יודע באיזה דרך יתקבל בהקדם, ולכן הנני כותב ישר אליו וגם ע"י ידידנו * בפאריז. ומטובו להודיע ההנהגה בזה על להבא.

ולסיים בדברי הרב:

כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א כותב באחד ממכתביו: "הצ"צ אמר - מלה הבאה בדבור הוא ברבים, שבכתב - לפני העולם, שבדפוס - לדורי דורות".

- ואולי אפ"ל בדיוק הלשון דורי דורות שהוא לכה"פ ארבעה דורות: דורי שנים דורות שנים (ע"ד משארז"ל סנה' צט, א עה"פ דור דורים),

ע"פ מש"כ הצ"צ בפירושו לתהלים (קמה, ד) "דור לדור הם כל סדר ההשתלשלות כו' כי כל העולם נקרא דור". וא"כ ד' דורות הם ד' עולמות אבי"ע. וכמו שד' עולמות אבי"ע כוללים כל העולמות, כמו"כ בהבטוי דורי דורות נכללו כל הדורות, ועייג"כ לקו"ת ד"ה ביאור ענין מוצאיהם.
